Expressing Preferences There are two alternatives for expressing preferences: 1. Would you rather drink juice or a fizzy drink? I would rather drink juice. I’d rather drink juice. 2. Would you prefer to eat meat or a fruit? I would prefer to eat a fruit. I’d prefer to eat a fruit. Other variations in form: 1. Prefer + Verb in the “ing” form. She prefers eating fast foods during weekends. 2. Subject + Would + Prefer + Verb in the infinitive. She’d prefer to eat breakfast alone. 3. Subject + Would + Rather than + Verb in base form. They’d rather have pizza than eat vegetables. Note: Rather usually goes with “than” You can use both: “Would you prefer” or “Would you rather” for questions. Would you prefer…? Would you prefer to have some tea or a cup of coffee? Would you prefer to be called by your first or last name? Would you prefer to watch a movie or go to a club? Would you rather…?
