word processing software
1.
What is the smallest square piece of cardstock that is required to make a lidless box by
cutting 3 inches from the corners and bending up the flaps to form a box of 48 cubic
inches? Justify your answer. If you need more space for your answer, write on the back
of this paper.
2.
Model the problem in #1 using cardstock, ruler, and scissors. What was most difficult
about modeling the problem? What insights did you have while modeling the problem?
Performance Task/Event
3. Use the Internet to research examples of minimizing and maximizing problems.
Described what you learned while researching minimizing and maximizing problems.
Description of Task: Part Two
Scenario:
You are a sales person for a major building supply company. A customer wanted to buy the
smallest square piece of sheet metal that is required to make a lidless box by cutting 5 inches
from the corners and bending up the flaps to form a box of 75 cubic inches. A couple of days
later, one of the other salesmen asked for your help. His customer wanted to buy the smallest
square piece of sheet metal that is required to make a lidless box by cutting 1 foot from the
corners and bending up the flaps to form a box of 9 cubic feet. You decided to help the other
people in sales by preparing a summary sheet for them so that they can help other customers
with the same type of request. You know that the store carries pieces of sheet metal that are ten
feet wide and twelve feet long. The machine shop cuts the sheet metal to any size. In your
summary include example solutions of each of the above problems along with drawings and a
derivation of the formula that includes restrictions to find the smallest piece of sheet metal for
future requests.
Before beginning your work:
 Consider how problem #1 and your internet research might help you accurately complete
this task.
 What does a summary sheet look like?
 From the last sentence, it is clear that you need to write a summary of your work.
 Derivation of the formula means that you should show work as you derive the formula.
 Be sure to include in your summary any restrictions that should be made in regards to the
formula.
 Read the entire rubric before beginning your work.
You may use a graphing calculator and/or computer algebra software.
