NO ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS-MUST BE HARD COPY THIS SHEET MUST BE TURNED IN WITH YOUR ACTIVITIES AND A PARENT SIGNATURE Standard 8-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the settlement of South Carolina and the United States by Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans. Enduring Understanding: The human mosaic of the South Carolina colony was composed of indigenous, immigrant, and enslaved populations. To understand how these differing backgrounds melded into an entirely new and different culture the student will… DIRECTIONS: Choose two (2) activities to complete. One must be a written work; the other must be some type of visual display. Each activity will count as ONE (1) test grade and will be the first grades recorded in the second quarter. Activities are expected to be completed outside of class on your own time. ACTIVITY 1: Native Americans in Your Local Area Make a list of major geographic and other landmarks that exist near our school (such as rivers, lakes, mountains, buildings, roads, etc.). Decide whether these same landmarks existed 500 years ago, when Native Americans were the only ones who lived in the area (the first European settlers did not arrive until the mid-1500s). If so, how did the landmarks have an impact on the lives of Native Americans at the time? Dozens of Native American tribes lived in South Carolina during and prior to colonial times. Determine which Native American tribe lived in the areas near our school (you might have to go to local resources to determine the answer). Research the lifestyle of that particular tribe (i.e. customs, religion, language, allies/enemies, farming or hunting practices, etc.). Discuss how Native Americans in your area differed from tribes in other areas of the state (such as the Cherokee, who lived in the upstate). This information should be compiled into a 2-3 page paper-MLA format. ACTIVITY 2: Native Americans across South Carolina Separate a sheet of paper into two columns. Label one column “Similarities,” and the other column “Differences”. In this activity, you must choose any two of the Native American tribes living in South Carolina during the 16th century. You can choose to research any of the tribes listed below: • Catawbas • Peedees • Waccamaws • Waterees • Santees • Cherokees • Saludas • Yuchis • Waxhaws • Cheraws • Yemassees • Westos You must find information detailing the tribe’s geography, population, history, culture, language, and other specifics. Then, compare your two chosen tribes by creating a “Similarities” and “Differences” chart. Display all findings on a poster. ACTIVITY 3: Founding a New Settlement Imagine that you are among the first Europeans to arrive in South Carolina during the late 1500s. It is your job to create a permanent settlement in the New World. Write a 2-3 page paper with the title, “The First Year…” This paper should explain your plans for settlement (such as the location, purpose, population, and long-term goals), as well as the obstacles that they might have to face during the first year as a European settler trying to make it in the New World. Make sure you consider such factors as Native Americans, harsh weather, organizational problems, disputes among settlers, supply shortages, etc. NAME:_______________________________ #_____ Aside from simply listing the problems that you might face, you must come up with a plan to deal with such problems. Lastly, identify some of the emotions that you might feel as you prepare to create a settlement in the New World (a few emotions might be: hope, excitement, fear, anxiety, etc.). Paper must be in MLA format. ACTIVITY 4 Read through the Eyewitness to History (text p. 38) account and look at the things that Hilton and his men saw in the new land. Are those same things here today? Imagine that you are a journalist traveling with William Hilton on that voyage of discovery. Write a 2-3 page report on what you see and what you think about the new land. Report must be in MLA format. ACTIVITY 5 Use a search engine to locate pictures and information on Charles Towne Landing. Create a visual display about the original settlement. Historians have faithfully recreated what the houses and gardens looked like in the original settlement. Evidence can still be seen of the moat and palisades that protected the site from unwelcome visitors. ACTIVITY 6 The proprietors were so in need of people that they actually advertised for more settlers. Create your own poster advertising the great life in South Carolina. Remember, that like all advertisements, a point of view needs to be advanced in this poster. ACTIVITY 7 Imagine you are an indentured servant living in the colony. Write a letter to an acquaintance back to England. Explain why you were willing to make such a deal. What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages? ACTIVITY 8 Ms. Eliza Lucas Pinckney certainly was a resourceful, determined woman. Create a biographical display (poster, scrapbook, PowerPoint (must be printed out to hand in) about Eliza Lucas Pinckney sharing as much information as possible about this influential colonist. ACTIVITY 9 Rice was extremely important to the early settlers. Create a display showing how rice was produced. One excellent source of information is: http://sciway3.net/proctor/state/sc_rice.html ACTIVITY 10 The horrors of the middle passage are virtually impossible to exaggerate. Several primary source documents exist that explain the conditions captured Africans were forced to endure. Research the Middle Passage and find examples of these primary sources and create a display showing your findings. ACTIVITY 11 Pretend that you are a young person from Charles Town who is visiting with a cousin in the Up Country. Write a detailed letter back to your family explaining the dangers of thieves and bandits attacking travelers and residents alike. While you are visiting, you discover that your cousins are members of a group called the Regulators. Explain how the group was formed and why they had to take the law into their own hands. Why might the people of Charles Town feel differently about the Regulators than did people in the Up Country?
