Hurricane Katrina

CYCLE C Team assignment

1.

Read and analyze:

On August 29, 2005, Katrina made landfall along the Gulf Coast as a category 3 hurricane. Although the storm had strengthened to a category 5 over the Gulf of

Mexico, it weakened before it reached the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts.

However, its winds of 120-140 mph and wide span claimed more than 1,800 lives and caused over $125 billion in damages. Heavy rainfall created a massive storm surge that flooded coastal communities leaving 80 percent of New Orleans underwater. Businesses and homes were destroyed leaving people without any possessions. Power outages, debris, and dangerous contaminants also created difficulties for rescue workers to continue to save survivors who were hidden amongst the rubble. The people that stayed behind and survived the storm were taken to shelters and later moved to other states. Due to its high economic losses,

Katrina is recorded as the most destructive hurricane that has hit the United

States.

Task:

Hurricane Katrina has reminded citizens of the United States about the threat from large hurricanes along the coast. Local concerned residents of New Orleans have hired your group to design a plan to prepare the citizens for a potentially large hurricane. You will design a PBL model to help you prepare a plan of action.

Please keep in mind the question; How can we prepare citizens for a large hurricane so that mass casualties are avoided?
