Sermon Notes . . . “The Good Samaritan”
Series: Parables
Text: Luke 10:25-37
Jason Taylor
May 3, 2015
Parable . . . an earthly story with an underlying spiritual or moral teaching
which is not always apparent immediately.
Used primarily by Jesus to . . .
 Give light to the searching heart and darkness to the unrepentant
o
o
Reveal knowledge for the purpose of salvation
Conceal knowledge for the purpose of judgment
A Parable for One Person
The Lawyer (Verse 25)
 An expert in the Law
 An unbeliever who is trying to gain God’s righteousness through the Law
 He is attempting to do the impossible—eternal life through the Law
 Like so many church going people today—He is living a hypocritical life
apart from Jesus Christ
 Notice he calls Jesus, “Teacher” rather than Lord or Messiah—Like many
religions today (ex. Judaism, Islam, Jehovah’s Witness, etc.) he viewed
Jesus as a good teacher, rather than the Son of God
 My testimony
“What must I do…” (Verse 25)
 He was looking to accomplish his salvation. Our salvation is a free gift of
God (Ephesians 2:8, 9)
 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind” (Verse 27)
 “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Verse 27)
o Greek word Agapao…“Christian love, whether exercised toward
the brethren, or toward men generally, is not an impulse from
the feelings, it does not always run with the natural inclinations,
nor does it spend itself only upon those for whom some affinity
is discovered. Love seeks the welfare of all, Rom. 15:2, and
works no ill to any, 1 Cor. 13:8-10; love seeks opportunity to do
good to ‘all men, and especially toward them that are of the
household of the faith,’ Gal.6:10. See further 1 Cor. 13 and Col.
3:12-14.” Vines Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words

Choice—not a feeling
Focused on the other person rather than self
Not expecting anything in return
Love is given to all who are our “Neighbor”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (matches the behavior of the Good
Samaritan)
 Love is patient
 Love is kind
 Love is not proud
 Love keeps no record of wrongs
 Love is not self-seeking
 Love thinks the best of others
 Love rejoices in truth rather than evil
“Do this and live” (Verse 28)—This is an impossible task apart from Jesus
The Parable (Verses 30-35)
 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (matches the behavior of the Good Samaritan)
 Love is patient
 Love is kind
 Love is not proud
 Love keeps no record of wrongs
 Love is not self-seeking
 Love thinks the best of others
 Love rejoices in truth rather than evil
A Parable of the Perfect Person
Jesus is our Perfect Example
