Kings County Special Education Local Plan Area ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION FULL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY Steps are taken, including placement of classes, to ensure that students with disabilities participate in academic, nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities to promote maximum interaction with the general school population. Children with disabilities are educated with children who are not disabled. Placement in special classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability of a child is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily. The child is not removed from age appropriate, regular classrooms solely because of needed modifications in the general curriculum. In providing or arranging for the provision of nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities, including meals, recess periods, and the services and other nonacademic activities specified in federal regulations LEA ensures that each child with a disability participates with nondisabled children in those services and activities to the maximum extent appropriate to the needs of that child. Transportation is available when required for students with disabilities, as determined by IEP teams. Legal Reference: 20 USC 1412(a)(2) B1 May 2011
