Tourist Places – Exploring Mangalore
Mangalore is rightly called the gateway to Karnataka as it is neighbors with other popular tourist
destinations - Kerala in the south and Goa in the West. Mangaluru is a blend of traditional and modern
cultures which makes it an exciting city to visit and experience the sights and sounds here. Mangalore's
tourist attractions includes a mix of beaches, temples, churches and other recreational spots.
Popular Churches in Mangalore
Mangalore is a mix of many ethnic communities. It also has a large Christian population in the city. While
on your holiday in Mangalore you can notice many Churches and Cathedrals around the town.
Church of Our Lady of Miracles
Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine priest of Salesette, built the Church of Our Lady of Miracles, better
known as Milagres Church of Mangalore, in 1680.
Adjacent to the Church is the Chapel of St. Monica, the Patroness of the Catholic Mother’s Sodality, the
first of its kind in the Diocese when it was started in 1887 by Fr. Torri, S.J. He built the Chapel probably
the same year. It contains a magnificent altar with a French painting of St. Monica and her son St.
Augustine which is a rare piece of art.
This Church is situated in Hampankatta of Mangalore city and it is famous for its architectural
construction.
Rosario Cathedral: the Church of the most Holy Rosary
This is one of the ancient churches of Mangalore. A German (1845-1888) was the first Parish priest of the
Cathedral. He introduced the order of Ursuline Franciscan Congregation in the Cathedral in the year
1888.
St. Aloysius Church (Chapel) and St. Aloysius College
On the top of the lighthouse hill, 2 kms from Mangalore is the Light House - an 18-century-old monument
inside the Tagore Park. It stands, adjacent to the Idga - a place where the Muslims offer prayers during
their festivals.
An ancient chapel called St. Aloysius Chruch (Chapel)is situated by the side of the Lighthouse. The walls
and roof of the chapel are decorated with paintings depicting Biblical stories. An Italian Jesuit Fr.
Mocheni did the paintings. Next to the chapel stands an 18th century St. Aloysius College, which is a
reputed educational institution in Mangalore.

Beaches
Karnataka is blessed with 300 km of pristine coastal
stretch arrayed with famous beaches. Enjoy a
perfect holiday with gentle waves, palm-laced
beaches, silver sand, calm and peaceful alleys.



Bekal Beach : Bekal Fort is the largest fort
in the state of Kerala, India, spreading over
40 acres. The Fort appears to have been
built up from the sea since almost three fourth of its exteriors is drenched and the
waves continually stroke the citadel.
Mangalore Beach : This is situated at Mangalore. Mangalore is close to the
backwaters formed by the convergence of the Netravati and Gurupur rivers.
Tanirbhavi Beach : This is one of Karnataka's finest beaches, is located in close
proximity to the Mangalore Port. This long and beautiful coastline comprises of long
stretches of sand dotted with palms and offers a spectacular view of the Arabian Sea.

Some more exciting beaches such as Someshwar in Ullal, Panambur clear
water beach, etc.
Rivers/Water bodies
The Western Ghats have several lakes and rivers.
The west flowing rivers that drain into the Arabian
sea are fast-moving, owing to the short distance
traveled. Born as small streams they flow into
rivers to join the ocean.




Shishila : This is situated on the banks of
Kapila River in Shishila village. This place is
also referred as Matsya Theertha. The Mahashir (in Tulu 'Peruvelu') fish is found in
huge numbers in the Kapila river. A fish sanctuary is situated near the temple. This is
a 2 hrs drive from Puttur.
Karinje : The view of the lake below a hill will certainly cool one's eyes. A temple
stands high on the hill amidst beautiful surroundings.
Kumaradhara : This is a beautiful river bed for camping and picnic. An ideal place
to laze around, do fishing and relax. It merges with the Netravati River at
Uppinangadi before flowing into the Arabian sea.
Kottappuram : is a scenic backwater stretch near Kasargod. Four rivers flow into
the backwaters and there are many small islands along these backwater stretches,
where birds can be seen. A house boat cruise can be organized on request.
Hill Stations and Mountains
The Western Ghats extend from the Satpura range
in the north, through Karnataka into Kerala and
Tamil nadu. The central portion of the narrow
coastal plain between the Western Ghats and the
Arabian sea is known as Kanara. The major hill
range starting from the north is the Sahyadri range.
This range is home to many hill stations like
Kudremukh and Kodagu.



Coorg : is on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. It is a hilly district with the
lowest elevation in the district at 900 metres (3,000 ft) above sea-level. Talakaveri,
Abbey falls, Raja seat are some of the main attractions.
Jamalabad Fort : is located 8 km north of Beltangadi town, is 1788 ft above sea
level. The fort was built by Tipu Sultan in 1794. Jamalabad is a trekking destination,
with the climb up to the fort. The top of the fort offers good views of the surrounding
landscape and the Kudremukh range.
Mandalpatti : is a beautiful scenic place. It is 35 - 40 Kms from Coorg. It is an
Offroaders destination and is a beautiful drive upto the peak. Covered with fog most
part of the year, the peak has a view point. The view is breathtaking from there.


Bisle Ghats : is close to Kukke Subrahmanya, a drive through the Reserve forest
leads to the top of Bisle Betta and there is the acclaimed Bisle view point, from
where we can view the mountain ranges of Kumara Parvatha, Puspha Giri, Dodda
Betta and Putta Betta. The scenic view has a valley wherein Giri river separates this
spot and those mountain ranges.
Charmadi Ghats : Charmadi is a village in belthangady taluk. It is one of the points
in Western ghats through which motorable road passes connect Dakshina Kannada
with Chikmagalur district. This section of ghat is known by the name of Charmadi
ghat. Ballarayanadurga is a fort atop a hill located about 10 km from Sunkasale, on
the Kottigehara - Kalasa route.
Temples
Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka on the west
coast has some of the most famous temples. This
includes the famous Manjunatha temple at
Dharmasthala and Subramanya temple at Kukke.





Dharmastala : At a distance of 27 kms
from Puttur, this is a temple village on the
banks of the Nethravathi River in the
Belthangadi taluk of the Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka. Lakshadeepa- the
festival of lights is the annual festival of Dharmasthala off in November-December.
Kukke Subramanya : is a Hindu temple located in the village of Subramanya in the
Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada District. The temple is one of the pristine
pilgrimage locations in India. Here Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped as the Lord of
all serpents.
Kadri Manjunatha : located in Mangalore dates back to approximately 1068. The
square temple, nestles at the foot of the highest hill at Kadri in Mangalore.
Kateel : The main attraction of the town is the temple of Sri Durga parameshwari.
The holy temple is situated on an islet in the middle of the sacred river Nandini
amidst panoramic scenes and fascinating greenery.
