Anna of Byzantium Symbolic Character Collage
Symbol – a material object used to represent an abstract concept.
1. Choose one of the characters from Anna of Byzantium.
2. Determine 10 important attributes of this character. Use these questions to
guide you:
What are his/her interests, passions, strengths, weaknesses, habits, and/or
fears?
What does he care about?
What personality traits does he/she possess?
What are his/her best qualities? His/her worst?
3. Choose an image to symbolize each of the ten items that you choose. For
example, if you describe the character as angry, you might choose a picture of a
raging fire to symbolize uncontrolled anger. You may draw your images or use
pictures from the Internet, magazines, etc.
4. Arrange those images in a poster collage. Your collage should be at least as large
as a standard piece of paper, and make sure all of the symbols are easy to see.
When arranging your pictures, decide how you will identify which symbols
represent the most important parts of this character. For example, you may
decide to put those images in the center of the paper or make them larger than
other images.
5. On a separate piece of paper, create a key that identifies each image and
describes how it symbolizes an important part of the character. Include a quote
from the text (with page #) that supports each character trait, and explain how
that quote supports your trait. At the bottom of the key, include a statement
that explains how you decided to arrange your images.
6. Make sure your name and period are clearly written on the FRONT of the poster
and at the top of your key/explanation. Do not staple or attach the
key/explanation to the poster.
