First United Methodist Church Woodbury Newsletter Feb 2013 A Word from our Pastor: “The Season of Lent” During the month of February, we begin the season of Lent. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of selfexamination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "miniEaster" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. This year we will take a unique slant on “giving up” something by suggesting that we give up some of our “carbon footprint”. See the list below for a few suggestions on how we might be better stewards of our world. I pray that each of us use this Lenten season to grow spiritually and deepen our relationship to Jesus Christ. Blessings, John Wesley Carbon Fast for Lent Ideas that can help protect and preserve our natural resources and help us be good stewards of our planet, by reducing our carbon footprint Bring reusable bags when you purchase groceries Regularly check the Tire pressure on your car (Improperly inflated tires account for wasting about 1.2 Billion gallons of gas per year.) Reduce junk mail by contacting DMAChoice.org and opting out Turn the temperature knob on your washing machine to “cold/cold” and leave it there. Buy a refillable washable bottle to save your filtered water instead of buying bottled water. (More than 150 billion liters of bottled water are sold every year; this contributes significantly to landfill and transportation emissions.) Use solar powered lights in landscaping or other areas that are exposed to regular sunlight. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
