ABOUT THE FOREST: The Coconino National Forest is one of the most diverse National Forests in the country with landscapes ranging from the famous Red Rocks of Sedona to alpine tundra on the San Francisco Peaks. The Forest is located in Northern Arizona and is characterized by a broad plateau of ponderosa pine bounded to the south by the rocky slot canyons of the Mogollon Rim, which then transitions into the Upper Sonoran desert area of the Verde Valley. The Coconino National Forest consists of three Ranger Districts covering approximately 1.8 million acres. The Mogollon Rim Ranger District is located on the south end of the Coconino National Forest. Although remote, this amazing location offers countless opportunities for Hiking, Climbing, Mountain Biking, Fishing, etc. There is a café, convenience store/garage/gas station located at the junction of Lake Mary Rd and Highway 87, about 10 miles to the south of the Ranger Station. Other limited services are located in Pine/Strawberry to the south about 30 miles, with Payson having full services 45 miles to the south. Flagstaff is approximately 65 miles to the north. Winslow is 45 miles to the north. Both Flagstaff and Winslow are full service communities. Crew quarters may be available at the Blue Ridge Ranger Station. The Flagstaff Ranger District is based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff is located at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40, and is the largest city in Northern Arizona. As a mid-sized city, Flagstaff has approximately 80,000 people living in and around it. The city is also the regional center and county seat for Coconino County, the second largest county in the 48 contiguous states. It is nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks and surrounded by one of the largest pine forests on earth. At nearly 7,000 feet, Flagstaff is also one of the highest elevation cities of its size in the United States. There is no government housing available in Flagstaff. Rents in Flagstaff range from $500-700 for a one bedroom apartment. The Red Rock Ranger District is situated in the Verde Valley and its “Red Rock Country” is world renowned for its sensational red sandstone mountains, cliffs, spires, buttes, and mesas of Sedona, Arizona. Diverse vegetation is found within the District; mixed conifer canyons exist at higher elevations, ponderosa pine forests and pinyon/juniper woodlands dominate the midelevation sites, and desert shrub and grasslands are present at the lower elevations. The Red Rock Ranger District Office is one mile south of the community of the Village of Oak Creek, approximately eight miles south of Sedona, Arizona. Located in the Verde Valley and Yavapai County, the Red Rock Ranger District Office is within easy commuting distance (approximately 8-20 miles distance) of the entire Verde Valley and its numerous small communities. The Verde Valley is about a two hour drive north from Phoenix, Arizona and one hour drive south from Flagstaff, Arizona. Seasonal housing may be available on the Red Rock Ranger District.
