A Character Profile for Kenny
Kenny, the 15 year old from “Doing Something”, is an awkward, self-conscious teenager, who
values romantic relationships. Kenny shows his awkwardness several times in the story. The most
entertaining moment is when he is at the Stone’s Throw Restaurant and his knee fails him. He ends up
lying on the floor with a crowd of girls around him. Luckily, his clumsiness helps him to meet his new
love, Cynthia. Kenny is also very concerned about what other people think about him. For example, after
meeting Cynthia, he is quite worried about how she will view him if he decides not to spend the day with
her. His self-consciousness is also shown when he refers to himself as a “geek” and does not believe
that someone as beautiful as Cynthia would even want to date him. Finally, it is clear that Kenny values
love relationships. After first meeting Cynthia, he takes an enormous chance when he drives his parents’
boat without their permission just to impress her. At the end of the story, he counts the days until she
returns to him, and when she does, he admits to thinking a lot about her. These examples show his
devotion to her. Kenny is an excellent example of a stereotypical teenager: awkward, self-conscious, and
looking for love.
