Mean, Median, Mode, Variance, and Standard Deviation Assignment
1) For each group of scores below determine the following: a) mean, b) median,
c) variance, d) standard deviation.
Set A: 32, 28, 24, 28, 28, 31, 35, 29, 26
Set B: 6, 1, 4, 2, 3, 4, 6, 6
2) Your friend makes the comment that the local mayor was not in office very
long before leaving office. You wonder how long mayors of your town usually
stay in office, so you find records of how long the last 11 mayors served. Find the
mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation for the data below.
Years served by the last 11 mayors: 7, 3, 8, 9, 8, 3, 1, 7, 7, 8, 6
3) Suppose that in the past 9 years the highest temperatures on September 12 in
Orange city were: 70, 65, 93, 69, 72, 60, 62, 65, 67.
What would the mean, median, and mode be? Which best characterizes central
tendency for this set of numbers? Why?
Find the variance and standard deviation. Now, what would the variance and
standard deviation be if 93 were 63? How and why do these numbers differ?
