Jacksonville, Fla.—The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is pleased to announce its calendar
of classes and programs for the month of March, 2015. See below for a full listing of March
classes and programs.

Public Garden Tours
Tuesdays & Thursdays
11 a.m. | Free with paid admission
Celebrate Garden Month with a guided tour of the Gardens. Tours will be offered each Tuesday
and Thursday in March. Each tour will begin in the Museum Lobby.

Art Fundamentals: Acrylic Painting
Wednesdays, March 4 through April 8
1 to 4:30 p.m. | Members $170, Non-Members $190, Active Docents $85
Instructor Allison Watson introduces painting to beginning students and strengthens the skills of
intermediate painters. Learn composition for landscape and still life, color theory, and techniques
in acrylic. Participants may sign up for multiple sessions. Supplies not included. For further

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens kicks off Garden Month, presented by Community First
Credit Union with a fun-filled family day at the Museum that also coincides with a Weaver First
Saturday Free for All. Come stock your garden for spring with a great selection of plants from
local vendors, enjoy brunch and live music on the Café Patio, create art projects for kids, and
peruse our newest exhibitions! Come celebrate the Cummer Gardens in full bloom! For further

Artful Perspectives on the St. Johns River: Discussion with St. Johns Riverkeeper and
Jacksonville Historical Society

Reservations Required
The Museum will host a lecture honoring the past, present, and future of the St. Johns River.
First, Emily Lisska, of the Jacksonville Historical Society, will speak on the River’s history and
the importance it played in the development of Jacksonville. Then, St. Johns Riverkeeper Lisa
Rinaman will discuss the current state of the river and how citizens can help to preserve its

Garden Month Concert featuring KTG, Sponsored by Abbot Downing

Come relax under the stars with the KTG Band. From Marvin Gaye to Aretha Franklin, Usher to
Frank Sinatra, KTG will have you out of your seat and dancing in no time! Guests are invited to
bring chairs, picnics, and beverages of choice to enjoy an evening in the Cummer Gardens. A bar

Art for Two: Garden Book!

In honor of Garden Month presented by Community First Credit Union, students will explore the
Cummer Gardens and create a mixed media booklet based on their experience. Open to children
ages 3 through 5 and their favorite adult. Class size is limited. For further information, please

Jacksonville Dance Theatre Performance – Interpretive Dance inspired by the St. Johns
River

Inspired by the St. Johns River and the Cummer Gardens, Jacksonville Dance Theatre has
choreographed an interpretive dance to be performed in the Cummer Gardens (weather

History of Western Art: American Art

Explore art history through this monthly series of lectures that includes time in the Galleries. If
you just want to brush up on your art history for personal enjoyment, then join the Museum staff
as they lead you through the history of Western Art. Space is limited, and reservations are

Talks and Tea: The Cummer Gardens

During this month’s seated talk, Chief Curator Holly Keris and Director of the Jacksonville
Historical Society, Emily Lisska, will discuss the Cummer Museum’s rich history and role as a
landmark in Historic Riverside/Avondale. Special stories from Mrs. Cummer’s journals will be
shared about her hopes for the property, followed by a discussion of how these dreams have been

Plein Air Watercolor Workshop
Saturday, March 21

Robert Leedy will guide students through a plein air watercolor session in the Cummer Gardens.
Painting with light and color will be the theme as students learn how to compose, edit, and
simplify the subject matter, work with values, control washes, develop brushwork, retain the
white of the paper, and allow colors to mingle. This workshop is open to beginning and
intermediate students’, previous watercolor experience is not required, and personal attention is
stressed during the session. Lunch is included, but supplies are not. A supply list available

Art Adventures: Cummer Gardens

In honor of the Cummer Museum’s annual Garden Month presented by Community First Credit
Union, students will create mixed media works based on direct observation of the historic
Gardens. Projects will be completed within one class period. Open to children ages 6 through 12.

Garden Month Lecture and Luncheon with Scot Medbury, President of Brooklyn Botanic
Garden

Scot Medbury, President of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, will be speaking about how his leadership
at the Garden has helped guide this cultural institution to continue its commitment to education,
research, and the display of horticulture. Following Mr. Medbury’s talk, guests will enjoy a
lovely luncheon in the Olmsted Garden (will be moved indoors in cases of inclement weather).

Garden Conservancy Day

Join the Museum as part of the Open Days Program. Make the Cummer Gardens the first stop on
your tour of a number of homes in the Avondale neighborhood. Knowledgeable volunteers will
be on hand in each garden throughout the day to answer your questions. The Cummer Gardens
will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all private gardens will be open from 12 to 4 p.m. For further
