Money Earning Guidelines
FUNDING GIRL SCOUT ACTIVITIES COUNCIL PRODUCT SALES All Girl Scout members are encouraged to participate in
Council-sponsored product sale programs. These programs are designed to build 5 skills including: goal setting, decision
making, money management, people skills and business ethics as well can provide significant funding for Girl Scout
activities.
MONEY-EARNING ACTIVITIES “Money-earning activities” refer primarily to service or events carried out by girls and
adults to provide additional funding for specific Girl Scout activities. Troops/groups wishing to conduct money-earning
projects in addition to Council-sponsor product sale(s) must:
 Incorporate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience into the activity
 Have participated in or commit to participate the most recent product sale program
 Be approved using the Council permission form by a designated council representative
 Not hold the money-earning project during another council fundraising campaign (including United Way, if
applicable) or during a council product sale period (dates published annually)
 Must be age-appropriate
 Must be in keeping with the Girl Scout Mission
Neither girl nor adult members may participate in product demonstration parties, raffles, games of chance, or the sale of
commercial products. All money-earning projects must also comply with local, state and federal laws regulating sales
by minors, food handling, etc. and my not be conducted on the internet.

Getting Started Checklist:
 All money-earning and fundraising methods employed by Girl Scout troops/groups must be in keeping with the
principles for which the organization stands. (Volunteer Policies)
o “Money-earning activities are valuable program activity for girls”.
o “The income from group money-earning activities never becomes the property of individual members –
girls or adults”.
 Troop/Group financial records must be up-to-date prior to submission of the Money-Earning Project Application
o This includes: Annual Troop/Group Financial Report; Detailed Cash record; Bank Statement and
previously completed Money-Earning Project Application and After Action Reports.
 Troop/Group has a bank account with a current Bank Authority Form on file with council.
 Money-earning project is scheduled for a single date, unless otherwise discussed with your membership
director.
 Flyer or announcement for the project follows council guidelines; flyer is attached for approval.
 Additional Girl Scout insurance has been purchased, if applicable. This is required for attending non-Girl Scout
members (i.e. siblings.)
 Money-earning project is age appropriate and includes girl planning.
Approval Process:
 4+ weeks in advance - Troops/Groups must submit application for approval to the service unit manager or
membership director/specialist.
 Approval must be received, in writing, prior to conducting any money-earning projects.

SUMMARY OF COUNCIL MONEY EARNING POLICY
“Money-earning activities” refers primarily to services or events carried out by girls and adults to provide additional funding for specific
Girl Scout activities. Troops/Groups wishing to conduct money-earning projects in addition to the Council-sponsored product sale(s)
must:
 incorporate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience into the activity
 have participated in the most recent product sale if eligible at the time
 must be age-appropriate
 must follow the Girl Scout Mission
 received the Council permission form (SU 104) by the designated Council representative
 follow local “blackout” periods as designated by area United Way or the Council
o United Way Campaign in the county or area as applicable;
o Council-sponsored product sales, beginning with the first day of order taking and ending with the last day of deliveries.
Neither girl members nor adult volunteers may participate in product demonstration parties, raffles, drawings, games of chance, the
direct solicitation of cash, and the sale or endorsement of commercial products.
All money-earning activities must also comply with state and local laws regulating sales by minors, food handling, etc. and may not be
conducted on the internet.
