Intended Learning Outcomes Identify the primary function of narrative in all literature; to craft a meaning and context for our lives. Demonstrate familiarity with various stories and motifs that crop up repeatedly in myth and folklore. Identify and explain a variety of archetypical figures in myth and folklore. Read, write about and discuss at least one major mythic classic (Epic of Gilgamesh) Read, write about and discuss at least one major folklore classic from India, Japan, and/or Native American sources. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between myth and folklore as literary genres. Explore in discussion and writing the mythic constructs that have an effect on our own lives. Type of Instruction Used in the Course: Lecture, discussion, audio-visual presentations, and reading and writing assignments are the major teaching methods in the course. Evaluation Devices: 5-15 Reading Quizzes: 30% of total grade Group Project: 20% of total grade Midterm Exam: 25% of total grade Final Exam: 25% of total grade Attendance Policy: Attendance is importance to gain the most knowledge and experience from this course. Excessive absences, consistent lack of preparation (i.e., reading not finished on schedule), and lack of participation can result in the lowering of your final grade. View the Grading Policy below and compare the percentage of classes attended to the chart to get an idea of your performance in this category. I.E., if you have attended 16 out of 20 classes, your attendance percentage would be 80%, a B- and very nearly a C+. Arriving late and leaving early may also count against your final grade. On the flip side, excellent attendance will help your grade in a positive direction for any borderline case. Testing Policy: Reading quizzes may be given any day reading is listed; reading assignments are due class time by the day listed. Quizzes and exams will be closed book and in-class unless specified otherwise. You will need to provide a Scan-tron form at your own expense for each exam. No make-up quizzes will be allowed but your lowest quiz score will be dropped no questions asked. Exam make-ups will be allowed only in the event of an emergency and must be taken within 48 hours of the scheduled course time. Homework Policy: All homework (group project essays and outlines, et cetera) must be sent to sendhomeworkhere@gmail.com. No physical copies will be accepted. Reading assignments and other class assignments must be completed in a timely fashion in order to ensure valuable classroom discussion.
