Tajikistan Road Network Additional Information Road Development China has invested approximately US$720 million in infrastructure improvements in Tajikistan, including the rebuilding, widening and improvement of the road between Dushanbe and Khujand, which began in August 2007 with equipment, labor, and oversight from China. • In mid-2005 construction began on a bridge across the Panj River to Afghanistan which was funded by the United States and opened in August 2007. Plans called for construction of several other bridges ultimately connecting Tajikistan to warm-water ports to the south. • The Government of Tajikistan awarded the implementation, management and maintenance of the road from Dushanbe to Chanak (Sughd) to a private-sector company, Innovative Road Solutions (registered in the British Virgin Islands and managed by Tajik citizens). This project covers 354 km, with three tunnels, 24 galleries and 39 bridges • Toll fees have a big impact on transport activities because the Dushanbe-Chanak road is the only route to a WFP sub-office which handles some 20% of the total activities in the country. Starting 20th May 2010, commercial transport companies contracted by WFP pay the very high toll fees of approximately US$ 0.34/km • WFP expects the transport companies will seek to transfer part or all of the new expenses to WFP. WFP office vehicles are also required to pay US$0.05/km. The WFP approached the Prime Minister, the Minister of Transport and IRS to seek a waiver for the movement of humanitarian goods. However, the Government of Tajikistan and IRS declined and the Minister of Transport stated he had no authority in the matter.
