The 1st of March was a very welcome day for us in Matabeleland as we received some desperately needed rain and hopefully it will continue. I hope the rest of the country receives the much needed rains as well and the crops have been rescued in time. The first Regional Meetings of 2015 are being held countrywide. Please make every effort to attend in your province. A great deal of time and money has been spent to launch the MARS feeding scheme which we hope will assist the rearing of calves, your future herd. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage members to hold field days once again. So much can be learnt through interaction on site. Every dairy farmer has something to share with others as no two dairy farms are the same and we can learn so much from each other. Until next time we meet - keep mooo-ving on! This new system of calf rearing, developed at Red Dane Farming with input from top vets and cattle men is now available to all Zimbabweans. We have had overwhelming interest from visitors to the farm, at presentations to the Industry and from farmers. To ensure that all interested parties can understand the M.A.R.S. system and the products currently available, as well as explain the benefits of these to calf rearing, we have arranged to have the ZADF Regional Chairman do a presentation at the Regional Meetings to be held in February. We have tested the system on calves, but believe that the M.A.R.S. system also has a place in the rearing and housing of other animals such as pigs, sheep and horses. 3 The Red Dane calf rearing system with the use of M.A.R.S pens and MILK BAR feeders has a wide range of advantages including. 1) Clean area for calves all the time. 2) Reduction in disease and parasites 3) Saving in bedding costs 4) Reduction in labour costs. 5) Improved growth rates. 6) Improves animal welfare. 7) Land use flexibility (if you need the land where the pens are, you can move them) 8) Better milk digestion. 9) Less feed and milk wastage. If you are interested in healthy cows and a healthy business and want to hear more about how this system can make money for your dairy then please come to your local ZADF meeting and field day on the dates shown below. We are very pleased to advise Farmers that we now have supplies of PROPYLENE GLYCOL in stock. This product is particularly useful in dairy cows, and other ruminants such as sheep and goats, both pre and post partum, in cases where loss of appetite may be caused by ketosis. Ketosis is a condition in dairy cows which develops when they become nutritionally stressed after a difficult calving, change of climatic conditions and/or feed quality; this could lead to loss of appetite and anorexia, causing a loss of milk production, which could affect new born calves. Give the animal 3lt. of Propylene Glycol, administered orally at the rate of 1 litre 12 hours after calving, and then 2 x 1lt. litres at 12 hourly intervals after the first administration. Should there be no improvement with the animal’s condition after the second administration, your Veterinarian should be consulted. We are further pleased to advise that Phoenix Vet. has now been able to obtain this product from source, and consequently the price of 5lt. has been reduced from $15.00 per litre [i.e. $75.00 for 5lt.] to $7.00 per litre i.e. Farmer price is now $35.00 per 5lt.
