INTENDED AUDIENCE: Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Social Workers, Clergy,
EMT, Paramedics, PT/PTA, OT/COTA, and other allied health professionals that treat trauma patients.
PURPOSE: This conference will educate emergency medical service professionals on the essential components
involved in a variety of scenarios.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the types of carotid artery injuries trauma patients may present with.

Discuss how the FAST exam is performed in the Emergency Department.
Determine when it is time to transfer the patient to a Level 1 trauma center.
Discuss the spectrum of patient injuries from a blast mechanism.
Explain the systematic evaluation of the patient with blast injuries.
Discuss the pathophysiology, clinical features, and Emergency Department (ED) management of
thermal burns.
8. Identify the main types of pelvic fractures and how to stabilize them in the ED.
9. Discuss the different types of hardware used to treat femur fractures.
10. Identify any other potential injuries associated with pelvic and femur fractures.
11. Identify why a field triage system is necessary.
12. Discuss how the field triage system works.
13. Identify the criteria necessary to classify severity of patients.
14. Discuss the areas of triage, treatment, and transportation of patients.
15. Identify elements of a crime scene.
16. Determine which items are considered evidence.
17. Discuss how evidence should be preserved.
18. Recognize the “chain of custody.”
19. Identify the critical elements involved in the primary assessment.

21. Determine what is expected at the Level 1 trauma center.

23. Discuss the anatomy and physiologic changes with an open abdomen.
24. Discuss the techniques to manage an open abdomen.
25. Discuss the final outcomes of an open abdomen.
26. Discuss the importance of interactions between physicians and survivors of patients in the case of
sudden, unexpected death.
27. Formulate specific physician behaviors that maximize effectiveness in giving tragic news to
survivors.
