With your group, you will develop a Prezi Word Map about your assigned group topic.

Each group will develop their Prezi so that at the end of the week, the rest of the class can view your Prezi and take notes on the information you have provided.

Group 1: Resources Group
Renewable resources – resources replaced as they used
Ex. Water, plants (trees), air, sun
Nonrenewable Resources are used faster than nature can replenish them.
Ex. Minerals and Fossil fuels
Fossil Fuels – Forms of stored energy that are remains of living things made primarily of carbon and hydrogen through the process of carbonization.
Ex- coal, oil, natural gas.
Carbonization – The decomposition of plants releasing gases which change the chemical composition of the plants leaving only carbon and hydrogen.

Group 2: Intro to Coal Group
Coal- decomposed vegetation which is turned into solid brittle rock when it is compressed over a long period of time.

5 to 10 ft. of decomposed plant material is compressed to create a foot of coal

Most abundant fossil fuel

Less than one half the price per million BTU than oil and natural gas

1 lb. of coal can power 10-100 watt light bulbs for an hour

Should last for about 250 years at the current rate of use
 Use decreased during the 40’s and 50’s because oil and gas were easier to use

Use has been increasing since the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973

It is now used mainly for the generation of electricity
 In 1997 it was responsible for 31% of the nation’s energy consumption

Mostly transported by train or barge

China is the major producer and the U.S. is second

Group 3: Problems with Coal Group
Problems with coal
- High amounts of air pollution (CO
2
and SO
2
) are given off by coal power plants
- Contains sulfur causing air pollution when burned.
- This makes acid rain - rain that has a low pH
- Acid rain is devastating to land and water ecosystems.
- Causes more air pollution when burned than any other fossil fuel
- Mining causes land and water pollution

Group 4: Coal Mining Group
Coal Mining (2 types)

Underground mining is very dangerous o Collapsed mines, fires, gas explosions, and black lung – o Black Lung Disease - lungs are coated in coal dust

Strip Mining - the overlying layer of rock is stripped to get to the coal from the surface –
This is cheaper, safer, and yields 3 times more coal than underground mining. o Problems with strip mining:

less than one-half of the mines have been reclaimed (restored to their natural state)
 Acid Mine Drainage is when water reacts with mineral in the open mine forming highly acidic water pollution the environment killing aquatic organisms and waterfowl

Solutions to coal use

Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 requires that mined land be restored
( reclaimed ) to its primary use (forest, field, etc.)

Clean Air Act of 1990 forces companies to reduce the emissions (release) of SO

and NO
2 when burning coal

More coal in this country is coming form the mid-west instead of the east because it contains less sulfur.

New technologies are being invented to reduce air pollutants from coal ( coal scrubber - sprays the gas with lime or calcium water binding the SO
2
, causing it to settle out – expensive process to install)

Using natural gas is cleaner because it releases one-half the CO
2
and SO
2
of coal

Group 6: Intro to Oil Group

Crude Oil - oil from the ground, which must be refined

The world reserve should be depleted in about the next 40- 60 years at the present rate of use. An 80% depletion rate is expected by 2055.

The process of heating the crude to separate and collect components which are processed to produce gasoline and heating oil, or to make plastic, Styrofoam, jet fuel, lubricants for transportation and many other products.

Wells are drilled to extract crude from the ground- wells hit peak production when the pressure drops (U.S. oil production peaked in the 70s’)
 Texas, Louisiana, California, and Alaska produce most of the nation’s oil (Alaska and offshore regions still have untapped reserves)

Close to 70% of oil in U.S. is used for transportation

U.S. is using ethanol (grain alcohol) as a gasoline extender or substitute

Foreign oil prices are controlled mostly by (OPEC) – 11 countries – Saudi Arabia has 25% of the world reserve

World consumption is close to 70 million barrels a day.

What will happen when the world reserves hit peak production?

Natural Gas

Some new reserves are still being found and should last for at least 60- 80 years at the current rate of use.

Areas that contain oil usually contain natural gas

Consumption began after the first welded pipeline in 1925

U.S. demand grew rapidly after WWII

Consumption has been rising since 1986

Transported by pipeline or condensed for ships or trucks (pipeline system throughout the
U.S.)

Used in preparing many products and is being used more for electricity

Still used mostly in many industries as an energy source

It is the cleanest burning and highest heat producer of all fossil fuels – most expensive

U.S. is the top consumer of natural gas and imports some from Canada

Environmental Impacts of Oil and Natural Gas

Drilling causes destruction and subsidence (sinking) of land when oil and gas are removed

Surface and ground water are polluted during runoff and infiltration

Offshore drilling of oil causes seepage into the ocean, and disasters such as the 2010 Gulf
Oil Spill

Shipping accidents can cause massive oil spills in the ocean killing marine life

Exxon Valdez crashed in Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1989 releasing 250,000 barrels of oil in the sea

The burning of oil (gasoline) and natural gas cause air pollution
