From hidden hollows in the north to a spectacular ringed cove in the south, Tazewell County is a place of
rare and compelling beauty. There are several towns in Tazewell County, including Cedar Bluff (pop.
1,085), Claypool Hill (pop. 1,719), Pocahontas (pop. 441), Raven (pop. 2593), Richlands (pop. 4,144),
Tazewell (pop. 4,206), which serves as the seat of government, and Bluefield (pop. 5,078). Bluefield,
Virginia spills over into Bluefield, West Virginia, which has a population of 11,451.
Major elements of the Tazewell economy are service industries, trade, manufacturing, and transfer
payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits). Coal mining, tobacco agriculture,
and stock farming make important contributions to the local economy. Some of the major employers in the
County are Clinch Valley Medical Center, Wal-Mart, the school board, Southwest Virginia Community
College, Long Airdox Company (mining machinery), Joy Manufacturing, and Cumberland Mountain
Community Services. Continued diversification of the industry base is a major goal of the Tazewell
County Industrial Development Authority.

Access to healthcare in Tazewell County is limited by both geographic and economic factors. The county
is very rural and many residents live in remote areas. There are two hospitals in the county, Clinch Valley
Medical Center and Tazewell Community Hospital. Clinch Valley Medical Center is located in Richlands
town, and is a 200 bed facility, while Tazewell Community Hospital is a 56 bed facility located in the town
of Tazewell. The Tazewell County Health Department also operates a satellite clinic in Bluefield, and
several clinics in the surrounding region. Approximately 14.4% of residents lack health insurance, and
many more are underinsured.
As in the surrounding counties of Southwestern Virginia, Tazwell has a shortage of health care providers.
For every 10,000 residents there are 22.3 physicians, compared to the average of 27 in Virginia. There are
only 15 practicing dentists in the county, averaging out to 3.3 per 10,000 residents in comparison to the
Virginia average of 5.8. The number of licensed nurses living in the county is higher than the Virginia
average, at 105.8, but there are no physicians assistants working in the county. While the suicide rate in
Tazewell is higher than Virginia as a whole, mental health resources are scarce, and there are no
psychologists in Tazewell. The relative poverty and poor health status of the population indicate the need
for improved access to primary and specialty care in Tazewell County.
