During the month of charity, the students in Mme O'Neill's class at St. Catherine chose to help the
Peterborough Humane Society. The Peterborough Humane Society is a local organization that works to
protect and find homes for animals. Just before the Christmas break, representatives from the Humane
Society came to the school to collect the donations raised. The class raised over $120.00 and also brought in
many donations of pet food, toys and kitty litter.
During Advent the grade 4 students in Mrs. Messenger's class at St. Catherine discussed the topic of Peace
and how students can spread peace using their own 2 hands. The class brainstormed ways to be kind, loving
and gentle with others.
Can grade 4 students change the world?
The students decided that one person alone could not change the world, but working together they could
change a part of the world. The students were first challenged to go home that night and to use their two
hands to do an extra chore around the house. These acts would promote peace, love and kindness in their
own homes. The students asked their parents to donate a small amount of money for the extra chores that
the students completed.
The money the students earned was put towards the purchase of a bike for a child in Africa. If the students
could raise enough money to purchase a bike, then the teacher would match the money and buy one also.
As the campaign to spread peace was discussed around the school and in their homes, parents and staff
made contributions to buy even more bikes. The class raised enough money to buy eight bikes in a little over
one week.
Clearly grade 4 students can change the world!

The St. Stephen Royals Robotics team started competing in the UOIT
Lego Robotics Competition three years ago and the team continues to
improve on previous results. In the first year the teams scored zero points
while trying to compete with the inferior RCX robots. In year 2, the top
team scored 16 points using the new NXT robots and programmed them
using Java which the students learned in the Introduction to Computer
Programming course. In year 3, both groups chose to explore “behaviour
programming” using Java LeJOS libraries. We hoped to create a control
system using Java code that would enable the robot to respond to its
environment and collisions. Both teams used OOP (object-oriented
programming) concepts to program the sensors to battle with other sumobots in the sumo ring. Both teams
smashed our previous records and we hope to benefit from their efforts going forward. IceGroup 2 scored 49
points and team members are Eric Sheridan, Jonathan Irwin and Cole Brabant. IceGroup 1 scored 78 points
making it to Semi-Finals and team members are Brad McMillian, Liam Patterson and Jeremy Campanaro.
This reach ahead activity sponsored by the UOIT’s Faculty of Engineering has proven to be a very positive
partnership with the Computer Studies program at St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School. Special thanks
to Mikael Eklund and his team at UOIT. Thank you to Eric Sheridan and his parents, John and Toni, for their
support making Royals Robotics a reality. – Kiley McDaniels, Computer Studies

at the multiple district level where the poster won yet again!!
Theresa’s poster is now going on to compete at the international
level and if it wins there, she will win $5000.00 and a trip to Hawaii.
We wish Theresa luck. Well done Theresa!
