Computer Science with Honors, May 2009 GPA: 3.64 Languages: Java, C, C++, C#, VB, SQL RELEVANT COURSE WORK Computer Science: Operating Systems, Algorithms, Languages & Compilers, Networking, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Game Development, Information Security, Bioinformatics, Database Management Systems. Mathematics: Multivariable Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra/Matrices, Combinatorics. Breadth: Linguistics, Literature, Latin, Spanish, French, Logic, Physics, Psychology JOB EXPERIENCE Financial Software Developer Intern Bloomberg LP, Summer 2008 Migrated a financial analytical application from a legacy Fortran framework to a new, serviceoriented architecture using GTK, XML, and pthreads in C++. Incorporated user feedback and modern best practices to enhance usability and develop additional features, driving additional demand for the function on the Bloomberg platform. Student Developer and Systems Operator UW Center for Limnology, 2007 – Present Developed and maintained web-based, desktop, and portable (Pocket PC) applications for data-gathering and information management, in Java/JSP/Servlets, C#, VB. Sun and Linux server maintenance and migration. Oracle administration and optimization. Computer Science Teaching Assistant Wisconsin Emerging Scholars Program, 2006 – Present Facilitated weekly two-hour discussions for students enrolled in an introductory programming class to review and expand on topics learned in lecture. Worked with other team leaders to develop curriculum to reinforce the introductory Java programming course. PROJECTS & PRESENTATIONS Multithreaded Development in Computer Science Education Senior Honors Thesis, Ongoing Studying the role of multithreaded development and finding ways to incorporate it into undergraduate CS education, outside of a traditional Operating Systems course. Specific focus on role of multithreading in algorithms, data storage, and parallel processing applications. Killing Skype Softly Semester Project, Graduate Computer Networking, Spring 2008 Investigated the effects of a wide range of network conditions on Skype user experience, in order to find an effective means of targeting and destabilizing Skype traffic on a network level. Zoopomatic2 and Z3 University of Wisconsin Center for Limnology, 2007 – Ongoing Developed Zoopomatic2, an application for counting and measuring Zooplankton using live video feeds or still images. Created a series of tools to streamline the data analysis and quality control process and automate integration into the institutional data catalog. Expanded the system into Z3, a framework for developing a controlled vocabulary and custom data schema for counting and measuring in any scientific context, broadening its utility to more than just Zooplankton. Graph Visualizer Semester Project, Honors Algorithms, Spring 2007 Created a graphical framework for visualizing the execution of graph algorithms for use as a visual aid in an algorithms course. Implemented in Java using Swing and Java’s threading library. SIGCSE 2008 Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education National Convention, Spring 2008 Co-led a workshop for professors on peer-led team learning (PLTL) at SIGCSE 2008. Ran a mock discussion session with the professors to showcase different PLTL pedagogies and methods employed by the Wisconsin Emerging Scholars program. ACTIVITIES ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Competition), Fall 2007 Placed 13th in the region out of hundreds of teams. The competition challenges students to design and implement algorithms to solve difficult problems involving potentially large data sets or high degrees of computational complexity. Computer Science Consultant, Summer 2007 Advised incoming freshmen on directions to take in the Computer Science program, and authorized them to enroll in specific courses.
