Students must complete a minimum of 90 hours beyond the bachelor’s degree and 60 hours beyond the
master’s degree. A doctoral student is expected to satisfactorily pass comprehensive examinations at the
end of his or her coursework, complete a dissertation, and pass the oral examination on the dissertation
within nine (9) calendar years after admission into advisory phase coursework.
The Plan of Study and Residency Plan along with the Advisory Committee form must be submitted by the
end of the third semester of Ph.D. studies.
All elements of the Plans must be approved by the student’s Advisory Committee and approved by the
Program Area Coordinator (signatures on the Advisory Committee form).

Doctoral Comprehensive Examination Option:
Option 2: After completion of the major coursework, doctoral students declare their readiness to sit for
written comprehensive examinations. A meeting with the advisory committee is called to discuss (a)
whether the student is ready to go forward. The advisory committee, under leadership of the major
advisor, develops four comprehensive questions in the major area of study that are to be answered in
essay form by the doctoral student. Students may take one week to complete each question for a total of
four weeks to complete all four.

Midpoint Formative Review: All doctoral students are required to participate in a mid-program (usually after 18
hours of coursework or three semesters) formative review, in which they write a formal paper on one of a set of
selected topics, present it to a panel of faculty and peers, and receive constructive feedback from both faculty and
peers. This review is intended to help both the faculty and the doctoral student in her/his academic and scholarly
development, as well as to offer students the opportunity to gain experience in presenting their work as they may be
doing later at professional meetings and conferences.

Plan for Fulfilling Residency Requirements
The residency requirement for the Ph.D. program in Cultural Foundations consists of two courses
(listed above):
EDPF 89581 Pro-Seminar in Cultural Foundations (to be taken within the first three
semesters of coursework); and
EDPF 80090 Doctoral Residency Seminar (to be taken during one of the last two semesters of
coursework)
In addition, students must fill out the Professional Activities Associated with Residency form approved by each
student’s Advisor at the time of submission of the Plan of Study. May include anticipated activities.
