Minutes of the January 28, 2014 meeting
Present: Reggie Blaylock, Aaron Bruce, Nola Butler-Byrd (Chair), Sandra Cook, Anne Donadey

1. Minutes of the November 2013 meeting were approved with a few changes.

Announcements
Gloria Rhodes is in charge of the master calendar for Black History Month events
Black film festival downtown starting Feb. 1 is co-sponsored by SDSU
SD African American Museum of Fine Arts is co-sponsored by SDSU; important campuscommunity partnership
May 27: International Open House
Very well-attended and successful MLK Luncheon and Parade; MLK Luncheon in particular
was a very inclusive and moving event
5. Old Business
a. Update about DEO Proposal to revise the membership of the Senate’s Tenure Track
Planning Committee (Eniko Csomay)
SEC did not see the point of having a second faculty member from the DEO and wanted a better
rationale for including diversity. Discussion ensued. We agreed to revise the proposal to include only
the addition of the DEO chair and strengthen the rationale on diversity expertise.









b. Enrollment Show Rate Analysis Follow-up (Sandra Cook)
Admitted first-time freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU primarily went to UCs (all students
35%, local students 44%) or other CSUs (all students 21.5%, local students 16%)
13% of admitted first-time freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU went to out of state 4-year
public colleges, particularly in neighboring states (Arizona especially, as well as Washington,
Oregon, and Colorado)
9% of admitted first-time, local freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU enrolled at community
colleges in San Diego
For Compact scholars, 45.5% of admitted first-time freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU
went to UCs, 18% went to other CSUs, and 12.5% went to community colleges in San Diego
Of the admitted first-time freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU, 56.5% were students of
color (26.5% Hispanic, 15.5% Asian) and 38% were white
Of the admitted first-time, local freshmen who did not enroll at SDSU, 67.5% were students
of color (37% Hispanic, 10.5% Filipino, 10% Asian) and 28% were white
Of the admitted first-time freshmen Compact scholars who did not enroll at SDSU, 87.5%
were students of color (54% Hispanic, 21% Filipino) and 9% were white
c. Strategic Plan Working Groups updates (Aaron Bruce, Reggie Blaylock)
Faculty recruitment video has been completed
Online bias workshop for faculty recruitment committees has been created



If your faculty search yields two outstanding candidates that are both underrepresented, you
can petition the Provost to hire both
Ability Working Group is developing bigger-picture policies and practices relating to
inclusiveness and accessibility
Initiatives for recruitment of African American and American Indian students continue to be
developed
d. Accessibility statement for syllabi. Give Pam feedback. Should include new statement
in syllabus guide.
e. Updates re CTL Events Planning:
“Lessons from K-12 best practices” (Dean Joe Johnson)
“Disability is Diversity” April 24
f. Updates about disability issues—ASL task force must be convened
6. New Business
--SRS diversity award: process is being discussed. Students should self-select into the category
(alternately, judges could select students into the category).
--Diversity Awards ceremony April 30, 4:30-6:30—please nominate people (form on website).
--ASL club Wed. 3:30 p.m. this semester
