To develop and lead delivery of the SYLA Education Programme. Purpose of role:
Duties:
To be responsible to the Chief Executive for the development, implementation and management of the
Southside Young Leaders Academy Education Programme.
To teach the programme, within the age range 8 – 16 – against a timetable as determined by the Chief
Executive (currently on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays).
To plan and prepare learning activities for each boy, (alongside the Leadership Instructors and tutors), according to each boy’s educational needs, and record this in an ILP for each boy.
To monitor and assess the development and progress of each pupil and to contribute to SYLA’s overall reporting activity, as led by the Chief executive.
To lead on the annual baseline assessments of the young leaders, under the supervision and guidance of
SYLA’s two external education consultants.
To ensure regular and effective record keeping of intervention with pupils and provide regular progress reports, including where interventions are made by the teaching staff.
To support recruitment processes and management of teaching staff for the Education Programme.
To work with the Chief Executive/School & family liaison officer to evaluate the effectiveness of the education programme, through a process of continual review.
To communicate and consult with parents, when necessary, working in partnership with the Leadership
Instructor and School & family liaison officer
Act as safeguarding officer ensuring the policy is up to date, disseminated and adhered to. Training will be provided
To undertake other duties as may be required by the Chief Executive.
Personal qualities required: The job requires an interest in and good knowledge of issues faced by black and mixed race families. You will need awareness and understanding of – or a willingness to take training in - potential risks that might affect young boys.
Essential qualities and experience:
Graduate level qualification in a closely related field and/or a recognised teaching qualification
At least 2 years experience (within the last 5 years) of Primary school teaching (or equivalent in another relevant educational setting)
Experience of developing strategies for engaging all learners, and of adapting teaching approaches to meet the needs of different learners
Demonstrable understanding of Child Protection management and what constitutes appropriate and successful relations with children
Confident and competent user of ICT in a teaching context
Knowledge of the National Curriculum and its assessment
Excellent interpersonal / communication skills and an ability to self organise
Willingness to be involved in the wider life of the organisation
Ability to adapt style and approach, including taking on additional short-term responsibilities
Proven ability to prioritise a wide range of commitments and work to tight deadlines.
Desirable qualities and experience:
Proven record of successful subject leadership.
Developing and running activities and workshops in relation to literacy, numeracy and science.
Experience of having prepared pupils for KS2 SATs.
Knowledge of social and emotional issues affecting black boys.
A valid driving licence.
Additional Working relationships: You will be in contact with parents, schools and other agencies, and will lead the team of teaching staff and volunteers.

Monday – Thurs 9.00 – 5.00 and Saturday 9:00-12:00. Approximately
35 hours per week. You will be expected to start and finish later (6pm) on a Tuesday and Thursday in order to run the afterschool sessions.

6 months during which period the post holder will be required to submit work plans and indicate how these will be implemented.
