OBITUARY: Walter William Aunchman
DATELINE: Middlebury / Swanton
Walter W Aunchman, age 87 passed peacefully into the
arms of our Lord in the presence of his family on, June 6th at
St. Albans Health And Rehab Center in St. Albans,
Vermont.
Walter was born in Middlebury, Vermont on October 31,
1924 to the parents of Alexander and Esther{Henrick}
Aunchman.
He was raised on Seymour Street in
Middlebury, where he and his siblings shared many
adventures with the Shaw and Armstrong families. He
received his early education in Middlebury, forestalling the
completion of high school, at the age of eighteen, he enlisted
into army in 1942. He earned his GED from Middlebury
High School after the war in 1946.
Walter’s service to his country included, volunteering for
the, “Rangers, Third Battalion”, under Col. William Darby.
Wounded in Northern Italy, Walter was transferred to Army
medical facilities in North Africa. After recovering from his
wounds, he volunteered for the “First Special Forces”.
Walter participated in D-Day and was gravely wounded while serving in central France. After recovering from
his wounds he was no longer eligible for combat and he was assigned to the US Army Air Corps. Walter was
discharged from the army in the fall of 1945.
On December 27, 1947, Walter married the former Aline Lozier of Fort Kent, Maine. Together they made
their homes in Burlington, Vermont, Hartford ,Conn. and settling for over twenty years in Arlington Heights,
Ill. Walter was employed by Hamilton Standard as a Quality Control Supervisor for the Midwestern States with
a career spanning 34 years in the Aero Space Industry. He worked on projects ranging from propeller driven
aircraft to manned space flight and the US Space Station. Retiring in 1986 the couple built their Dream Home
in Punta Gorda, Florida. They enjoyed many years together, with numerous fishing trips to Maine and
Minnesota as well as traveling to Ireland, Italy, and the Hawaiian Islands. Walter and Aline's family included
many children sponsored by "World Vision" around the world for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his wife, Aline in 2003, sisters, Agnes Dumas and Mary
Shaw, brothers, Lawrence, Kenneth and Arthur. Walter’s youngest brother, Clarence was declared MIA in
Korea in 1951.
He is survived by his nieces Saundra and Alexis Dubois of Swanton, VT, Dawn and Albert Williams, Linda and
David Clapper of Burlington, VT, Laurie and Scott Aunchman-Dansig of Richmond, VT, Lisa and William
Johnston of Underhill, VT, Karen and Larry King of Bluff City, Tenn., Sharen and David Godwin of
Wilmington, NC. Nephews Kenneth Jr. and Carolyn Aunchman of Chesapeake, VA, Vernon and Margaret
Aunchman of Norfolk, VA, and Richard Aunchman of Burlington, and a sister-in-law, May Aunchman of
Bristol, TN.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. from The Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 326 College St., Middlebury. Father William R. Beaudin will
be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Aunchman family lot in
St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
