Draw and label the four stages of mitosis. Include the following terms where appropriate: nuclear
membrane, chromosomes, chromatids, centrioles, equator, spindle fibers, cytokinesis.
Refer to your notes for the correct drawings with labeling.
What are the three stages of interphase, and their function?
1. G1-cell growth and energy production for S phase
2. S phase-copy DNA
3. G2-cell growth and energy production
Define the following terms: somatic cell, mitosis, spindle fiber, centriole, centromere, chromatids,
parent cell, daughter cells.

Chromatids- two chromosomes attached together by a centromere.

This happens after the S-phase in interphase.

Centromere- button-like body that joins single chromosomes to form chromatids.

Centriole- cylindrical shaped organelle that provides the anchor for spindle fibers during mitosis

Spindle fibers- a network of filaments involved in moving and separating chromosomes during
mitosis

Mitosis- The process where a single cell divides resulting in two identical cells, each containing
the same number of chromosomes and genetic content as that of the original cell.

Somatic cell- All body cells that go through mitosis except reproductive cells.

Parent cell- the cell giving rise to daughter cells through cell division.

Daughter cells- cells resulting in the replication and division of a single parent cell.
Explain the difference between cytokinesis in plant and animal cells.
Cytokinesis in animal cells results in the parent cell’s cell membrane pinching together and separating to
create two genetically identical daughter cells. Plant cells grow the new cell wall from the middle of the
cell out. The cell wall grows and attaches to the parent cell’s cell wall separating into two daughter cells.
What is the purpose of mitosis and cell division?
The purpose of mitosis and cell division is to create genetically identical cells for the purpose of growth
in organisms that reproduce sexually, and reproduction for organisms the reproduce asexually.
