Nordic Conference on the biology of myelodysplastic syndromes 2011 November 16-18 First Nordic Conference on the Biology of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Dates: November 16-17 2011 Venue: Rosersbergs Hotell och Conference, close to Arlanda http://www.rosersbergsslott.se Host: Nordic MDS Group Background - Summary The Nordic MDS Group is supported by ”Planeringsanslag” from the Swedish Cancer Society. The Nordic MDS Group (NMDSG) meets annually in April, and in November for a two-day meeting. An important focus of these meetings is the pursuit of the clinical trials and epidemiological studies performed within the group. The first day of the November meeting has been designed as a "preclinical day", during which PhD students and post doc at the NMDSG centra present their projects. This activity has expanded during the last years, not the least as a result of the biobank material generated from the NMDSG Phase II GCP studies. Moreover, NMDSG collaborates intensively with MDS oriented research groups in Pavia, Italy, Hannover, Germany, and Oxford and Cambridge, UK. In April 2011 NMDSG therefore decided to expand the previous preclinical meeting to a 1,5 days conference with international participation. This meeting will be actively announced to all Nordic hematologists and open to international participants. Scientific Committee Eva Hellström Lindberg Sten-Eirik Jacobsen Mario Cazzola Brigitte Schlegelberger Kirsten Gronbeck Karolinska Institute Institute of Molecular Medicine Oxford, 25% guest professor Karolinska Institute University of Pavia Hannover Medical School Rigshospitalet Copenhagen Format Intense program focusing on the biology of specific subtypes of MDS and the utility of cutting-edge techniques such as exome and transcriptome sequencing, stem cell technologies, epigenetic profiling, telomere biology and immunology. We aim for 60 participants including speakers, limiting the number to 100. A strong focus will be on collaborative projects If funded, we will send out the call in June 2011 (NMDSG members has already booked Thursday Nov 17 for the meeting in the previous format). We also specifically ask the invited speakers to bring junior members of their respective research groups in order to create a network of junior researchers. We will aim for a low cost for accommodation for these participants. Also, all NMDSG center will be invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations. We have refrained from inviting US/Canadian colleges because of the costs. We prefer using available funds for lowering the costs for junior participants. A recent Nordic MDS grant will be used to cover 2 junior participants from Norway, Denmark and Finland. Abstracts Abstracts should be submitted before October 1 and will be used to divide contributions into oral and poster presentations. We expect speakers to present data in progress/unpublished results and will therefore not publish these on the NMDSG website.
