INTRODUCTION TO THE IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF
PSYCHOPATHOLOGY IN FAMILIES

In this very practical and hands-on three day workshop participants will get
the opportunity to obtain information and skills in the identification and
treatment of psychopathology in families. DVD’s, case studies, practical
demonstrations and experiential exercises will be used through out to
illustrate the different concepts. The focus will be on the following:




Mind the gap: Bio-psycho-social-spiritual gaps
Anatomy of the brain and the psyche
Effects of stress, trauma and abuse on the brain and psyche
Basic outline and treatment of psychopathology in children and families according
to the DSM-V.
The following aspects will be addressed:
 Neurodevelopmental and Neurocognitive Disorders (Autism Spectrum
Disorder, Intellectual Developmental Disorder and Attention-deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder)
 Mood Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder)
 Anxiety Disorders (Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder)
 Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders (Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder)
 Other disorders (Substances, General Medical Conditions)
 Trauma and Related Disorders (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder)
 Psychotic Disorders (Schizophrenia)
 Personality disorders (Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic
Personality Disorder)








Characteristics of dysfunctional families
Subtle ways in which children are emotionally abused
Psychodynamic causes of emotional abuse
Developmental issues in emotionally abused children
Effect of emotional abuse on children’s well-being and development
Personality disorders in parents and the effect of the above on children’s wellbeing (the effect of narcissistic, borderline and anti-social personality disorders on
children’s development, behaviour and well-being)
Typical behaviours in emotionally abused children
Application of sand play, stories, fairy tales and other play therapy techniques in
the assessment and treatment of psychopathology in children
Presenters: Dr Rinda Blom (social worker) and Dr Marina Olivier (psychiatrist)
Course hours are from 8:30-16:00 daily, with tea/coffee breaks, as well as
lunch breaks. Tea and coffee are included in the course, but lunches are
excluded. Please bring your own picnic basket for lunch.
