Name: _______________________________________________________ Period: ___ Date: ___________________________ Finding Volume Lab Purpose: To accurately use a metric graduated cylinder to find volumes of liquids and irregular solids. To successfully use a metric ruler to find the volume of rectangular solids. Task #1: Liquid Volume: Materials: colored water, test tube stand, 6 test tubes/A-F, graduated cylinder Procedure: 1. Label 6 different test tubes A, B, C, D, E, & F. 2. Into test tube A add 19mL of red water. 3. Into test tube C add 18 mL of yellow water. 4. Into test tube E add 18 mL of blue water. 5. From test tube C take 4mL and pour the 4mL into test tube D. 6. From test tube E take 7mL and add it to test tube D MIX. 7. From the beaker of blue water measure 4mL and pour it into test tube F. 8. From the beaker of red water measure 7mL and add it to test tube F MIX. 9. From test tube A take 8mL of water and pour into test tube B. 10. From test tube C take 3mL and add it to test tube B MIX. 11. Record the final color of the water found in each test tube in the data table below. 12. Measure & record (in the data table) the final volume of the water found in each test tube. 13. Convert the volume measurements into liters and record in the final column of the data table below. 14. Rinse out all test tubes and place upside down in racks. 15. Do not dump out or mix beakers of colored water. Test Tube Color Volume of Water (mL) Volume of Water (L) A B C D E F Task #2: Volume of Rectangular Solids: Find the volume of the following objects using the equation for regular solids: Formula for regular Volume = L x W x H = ? cm3 Object Domino Wood block Length (cm) Width (cm) Height (cm) Volume (cm3) Name: _______________________________________________________ Period: ___ Date: ___________________________ Task #3 Volume of Irregular Solids: 1. 2. 3. 4. Pour water into a 50mL or 100mL graduated cylinder. Fill half way full. Record Volume in mL Carefully place the irregular solid into the water. Record volume of water plus object Subtract the volume of the water alone from the volume of the water plus object to get the volume of irregular solid. VOBJECT = VWATER+OBJECT - VWATER Object Volume of Water alone (mL) Volume of Water plus object (mL) Volume of Object (mL) 4 marbles Used AA battery Analysis Questions 1. What is a meniscus? 2. What are the three methods for finding volume and why do you need 3 methods? 3. How does water displacement work when finding the volume of irregular solids? 4. Pick one task (1-3) and draw a bar graph of your data.
