I Love Reading Program Dear Family: This month the curriculum will focus on specific literacy goals, math outcomes and safety themes. The center of many learning activities and discussions will be specific topics about safety. Topics will include traffic/street safety, car seat safety, and personal safety at home/school. Math outcomes will cover matching by shape, size and color, exploring patterns, and counting and representing objects1-12. Literacy outcomes include drawing a picture with at least 5 details, understanding that an author is the person who writes the text of a story, and learning the sequence of a story. Writing objectives will focus on proper pencil grip when writing and drawing. It is important that you feel connected and informed about what your child is experiencing at preschool. Please check the parent boards in your child’s classroom as well as the bulletin board near the front entrance. Please let me know if you have a great idea of how to improve the home-school connection. Should you ever have concerns, questions or comments about anything regarding preschool or your child’s development, don’t hesitate to contact me. We appreciate your feedback about any aspect of the preschool. Stephanie Davis Preschool Director We would like to encourage you to participate in a fun and important reading program called “I Love Reading”. Reading aloud with your preschooler (also known as lap reading) is a crucial activity that will increase your child’s success in acquiring proficient reading skills in elementary school. The “I Love Reading” incentive program for preschoolers and their parents that encourages daily reading. Here’s how the program works: Develop a regular reading time during your daily routine. Read to your preschooler each day for 20 minutes. After reading each day, have your child color one block of the front of the reading record. A parent records the books that they read on the back. When the reading record is full (all blocks colored in), return it for a reading certificate and special surprise. Each month a new reading record will be distributed (October – April). HARVEST/HALLOWEEN PARTY GUIDELINES Children wishing to participate in the costume portion of our Harvest/Halloween celebration must wear their costumes to school that day throughout the entire preschool session. Teachers will be unable to assemble and help with costumes or apply make-up to the face. Children who are not completely toilet trained should wear a costume that is easy to remove for diaper & pull up changing or toileting assistance. Please keep in mind that we have a policy regarding weapons and facsimiles of weapons. This policy will be enforced during our holiday parties as well. Any child bringing props that represent any type of weapon will have it confiscated by your child’s teachers. Any type of scary, bloody or threatening items, costumes, pictures or themes need to be left at home. Ridgeview Elementary will not be dressing up in costumes. Party: October 30, 2014 Morning 10:15-11:00 Afternoon 2:15-3:00 Should you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please contact Stephanie, the preschool director, at 826-6280 or via email at stephanie.davis@moffatsd.org. Cold Weather is Coming! As cold weather approaches, please provide an adequate winter coat, mittens, snow pants, boots and hat for your child to participate in outdoor activities this fall and winter. If you are unable to provide this clothing for your child, just let your child’s preschool teacher know and we can help get you connected with those necessary items at no cost. Birthdays and Food At School We truly appreciate it when parents donate food for special learning activities, holiday parties and birthdays. For the safety of our staff and students, we cannot accept any food prepared at a student’s home. A caterer, commercial vendor or grocer must prepare any food items brought to the preschool for any purpose. Children’s Toys and Personal Belongings Please do not allow your child to bring toys to preschool. Not only is it difficult for teachers to keep track of these items, it is also difficult for other children to understand the concept of ownership. Special show and tell days will be designated each month for children to bring one (1) toy or personal item to show and share with the class. Thank you for your support! The Early Childhood Coalition is in need of parents to volunteer to serve on the Coalition for the 2013-2014 school year. This Coalition meets the third Thursday of the month. If you can help please contact Stephanie Davis at 970-826-6280 or stephanie.davis@moffatsd.org ECC PRESCHOOL PICTURES Preschool pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 15th, at the Early Childhood Center.
