Introduction Statistics

Prerequisite:
A recent (within the last two years) Math ACT of at least 23 or a grade of C or better in
Math 1010 within the last two years.
Objective:
An introduction to the basic concepts and methods of statistical data analysis.
Descriptive statistics, statistical graphs, statistical estimation techniques and
Hypothesis testing, regression and correlation; chi-square application, one-way
ANOVA.

Students will be able to use descriptive and inferential
statistics to interpret data and draw logical conclusions.
Students will choose and implement appropriate statistical
methods to analyse real life situations and draw conclusions
from the results.
Students will use correct statistical notation and vocabulary to
interpret and communicate data analysis results.
Text:
Beginning Statistics by Hawkes Learning System software.
You can purchase the Hawkes Learning System access code online at
hawkeslearning.com. It is required for the course. The access code includes
multi-media learning resources, homework and tests. Once you have used the access
code, it is non-refundable.
Content:
Chapters 1 through 8 and 10 through 12 from the text.

How to get started with the course:
 Log onto Canvas and set up your communication stream for the course. For
example, after setting up your profile on Canvas, any course announcement or
messages from Canvas can go directly to your mobile device (cell phone, tablet,
laptop computer…etc) or email instantly.













The course online communication between you and I is very important; any
course schedule updates will be announced through Canvas. Any online
communication between you and I will be through the Canvas inbox or
discussion board. I always answer students’ messages within a day on Canvas
each school day during the semester. If I have not responded to your email or
message for more than a day, then it means I did not receive it.

Follow the instruction on how to access hawkeslearning.com from Canvas. It
instructs you on how to purchase your Hawkes Learning System access code.
I will help you to get on the hawkeslearning.com, and teach you how to use the
online homework and learning resources on Hawkes .
You are required to take a timed pre-test at the testing center (ELC 2nd floor)
during the first week of the semester. It is for teaching assessment purposes only.
The score will not affect your grade.
Course event updates will be announced on Canvas Announcement.
Do the reading posted on Canvas before each lecture day.
Participate and complete the in class Discussion Problems and Projects with a
group.
Participate the Discussion Board on Canvas with the class outside the class.
Submit your assignments on time.
Take your quizzes/midterm exams/final exam on time

Homework:
Expect about 2 hours of homework for each hour in class. I encourage you to collaborate
on homework. Homework will be certified using Hawkeslearning.com. You are required
to purchase the Hawkes Learning system access code to complete your course homework.
The homework system is based on certification process. You are required to reach 80% to
certify the section homework to get your full homework score. There is late penalty for
the late assignment in Hawkes Learning system.
Discussion Problems:
A set of discussion problems will be given in class throughout the semester. You will
work on the problems in class with a group. You are required to bring either a laptop
computer, mobile device with WIFI, or smart phone to class to access the problems and
submit them online. Discussion problems are required to take it in class only. There will
not be any make up for missed discussion problems.
Projects:
A set of statistic projects will be given throughout the semester to help you better
understand the course materials. The final project is required to submit it in power point
presentation format. The final score for the project will include two in class presentations.
There will be a bonus project to extend your class project to present it at Festival of
Excellence in April 5, 2016. The bonus project is a research project using statistical tools.
Bonus project will be considered based on the commitment and quality. The bonus
project is worth for 100 pts.
Quizzes:
Chapter quizzes will be held after each chapter to give students important feedback, to
monitor student’s progress. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. Quizzes will be taken
online at Hawkes Learning system.
Exams:
There will be two exams during the semester and one final. Missed unexcused exams will
be scored as zero. If you have an emergency or illness, you are required to send me an
email and state the reason before the test date ends. The comprehensive final exam will
be held during the final week and it will be announced during the last week of class. All
tests will be taken on campus at the SUU testing center.
Attendance:
Regular attendance is crucial for understanding the subject matter. Do not fall behind – it
will be extremely hard to catch up. Attendance will be recorded on Canvas. The
attendance score will go directly toward the course bonus. Low attendance will affect
your in class group participation with Discussion Problems and Projects.
There will be no tolerance for any behavior that has a negative effect on other students’
learning in class. The instructor may ask you to leave the classroom. For example, talking
loudly in class will disturb the lecture and other students’ learning.
If your attendance or academic performance shows deficiencies you will receive a
notification from me through the Student Assessment Notification System. Please take
advantage of the support offered.
Academic Integrity:
Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
You are expected to have read and understood Policy 6.33 Academic Integrity and the
current issue of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding student
responsibilities and rights.
