ANDROSCOGGIN HEAD START and CHILD CARE BLOOD AND BODILY FLUIDS CLEANUP AND CONTAINMENT Related to Occupational Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, ACF Transmittal Notice IM-93.2, Head Start Standard 1304.22 (e)(4) Policy: Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care promotes health and safety by maintaining a clean environment for children and staff. The use of non-latex nonporous gloves by staff is required when in contact with blood and bodily fluids. Gloves are required during diapering, assisting with toileting, administering first aid, and when vomiting occurs. Procedure: 1. Staff will notify maintenance personnel and/or Human Resources of a hazardous waste spill. 2. Staff will make the spill area inaccessible to children. 3. A designated/trained hazardous waste disposal staff person wearing PPE’s (personal protective equipment) contains, cleans, and disinfects the soiled area according to the Spill Kit instructions. Spill Kits are located in the classroom First Aid/Emergency Response backpack. 4. Cleaning equipment used to clean spills of bodily fluids (mops, pails, etc.) must be cleaned and disinfected immediately after use or bagged and tagged for removal and disinfecting. 5. Materials contaminated with bodily fluids/ blood must be double bagged, securely tied and removed from the classroom. The use of gloves is not a substitute for hand washing and staff is to wash his/her hands immediately after the gloves are removed. Proper technique is to be used in cleaning and disinfecting all bodily fluid spills immediately after it occurs. SPILL KITS: Spill kits are available in each classroom located in the first aid/emergency response backpack.
