The Bob Smith Memorial Scholarship
The following describes the purpose and criteria for the Bob Smith Memorial Scholarship.
Purpose:
Bob Smith was involved in 4-H in Shelby County for over 45 years. He devoted countless hours while he
was a 4-H member and after. Bob showed livestock, served on the Shelby County 4-H Council, was a
leader for the Northeast Sodbusters, assisted with livestock weigh-ins, served as Pork Superintendent,
auctioned off Cherry Pies and livestock and assisted with fundraising for the livestock auction. The
Shelby County fair was not just an event to Bob, it was a passion. On March 21st, 2004 Bob passed away.
The Smith family wishes to help Bob continue to give back to the youth of Shelby County that have made
the Shelby County Fair a passion in their lives. The Bob Smith family will be awarding a $250 college
scholarship to one Shelby County FFA or 4-Her.
Applicant Qualifications:
1. Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) 2.5 or equivalent
2. Must have participated in Shelby County 4-H or FFA activities, and/or be currently enrolled in a
4-H or FFA Program.
3. Must be a graduating high school senior planning to attend a qualifying school in the year 2013.
4. No immediate relatives of Bob Smith will be eligible including nieces or nephews.
5. Once a student is awarded the scholarship they shall be ineligible for further awards from the Bob
Smith family.
Qualifying Schools:
Any two or four Year College, University or Post Secondary Trade School will qualify.
Payment of Scholarships:
Funds for the scholarship will be sent directly to the college or university that the recipient is attending at
the beginning of the second semester freshman year. It is imperative that recipients notify the Bob Smith
family of acceptance and enrollment of their chosen college or university and meet the requirements
specified.
Application Deadline and Selection Process:
1. The original application is due no later than May 24, 2013 to the address below.
2.
Final selection of scholarship recipients will be made by July 1, 2013.
Selection of the scholarship recipient will be based on 4-H or FFA participation, academic
achievement and financial need. Evaluation of scholarship applications and the subsequent
ranking of applicants shall be the sole responsibility of the Bob Smith family. Neatness in
preparation of the application shall be considered. Application folders or covers are not
encouraged. The recipient will be announced during the Shelby County Fair Cherry Pie Auction.
The candidate must submit a properly completed application. Please include one recent head and
shoulders photo of the applicant for publication purposes. Polaroid or other instant prints are not
acceptable. Color or black/white are both acceptable. Graduation picture is ideal. Please identify name
on the back of photo. Photo may not be returned.
