Oral Reading Skills: In order to communicate meaning, emotion, and understanding, students will be taught & encouraged to use these “Good Oral Reading Skills”: (1) read SMOOTHLY (knowing the words) (2) use appropriate VOLUME “Read & Thinks”! Students will be given frequent 5-minute “Read and Think” assignments in class to practice increasing their silent-reading speed and comprehension skills. Pizza Hut “Book-It”! Students will be required to read a minimum of 100 pages, or 300 minutes per month. This will count as a portion of their reading grade. This is just a minimum, however; everyone will be encouraged to read above that amount, through fun games, special events, contests, prizes, and parties that we will have throughout the school year. Book-Report! During this nine-week period, your child will have the opportunity to write his/her first book report! No worry though! They will be guided step-bystep throughout the entire process, during two class periods. This first book report will be a “short-form” report, which will prepare them for the longer book report writing process that we will begin in the 2nd nine-week period.
