All threshold treatment pavement markings on the eastern legs of Grange Road intersections are faded. Street lights are located only within the eastern verge of Grange Road and results in 'patches' of light on the corridor at night. The free flow speed of traffic was perceived to be higher than appropriate for the road environment, geometry and lane widths. No standing signage is present. Grange Road A large number of powerpoles are located within the clear zone, mostly within the western verge. The pavement on the road is wearing and in an average condition. Develop a corridor management plan to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Grange Road, including rationalisation of right turn Immediate movements or creation of right turn pockets where possible to improve movement and safety. Consider implementation of other Road Safety Audit recommendations. There is a need for additional RRPMS to assist with alignment recognition at night. off alignment. Kedron Brook bridge has no end treatment protection on the bridge wall (northbound direction). Footpaths on both sides of road are narrow (approximately 0.8m width). Signage to enforce left turn only movements at Blandford Street is minimal. The no right turn sign opposite Blandford Street is hard to see. Grange Road/Dennis Street Sight distance out of Dennis Street is limited. Sight distance out of Howard Street is limited. Grange Road/Howard Street The stop sign at the Howard Street intersection is obscured by a tree. On Green Tce approach, parked vehicles are found on left-turn lane. Green / Cox / Newmarket Right-turn from Newmarket Road to Cox Road managed by turn ban from 4pm-7pm. Observed instances of non-compliance. Strong right-turn demand from Newmarket Rd to Green Tce has the potential (and have realised through crash records) for rearend accidents as there are no dedicated right turn bays and current signal setup shows right-turn red arrow on through green. Develop a corridor management plan to improve traffic safety and movement for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Newmarket Road, including rationalisation of right turn Immediate movements or creation of right turn pockets where possible to improve movement and safety. Also Consider implementation of the Road Safety Audit recommendations. Need to improve safety for crossing pedestrians/cyclists at Newmarket Rd/Lamont Rd Lamont Rd / Newmarket Rd Vehicles turning right into Lamont Rd from Newmarket Rd must stop in the right hand lane. Drivers travelling on Newmarket Rd are trained to stick to the right hand lane due to parked vehicles on the kerbside lane. This has the potential for rear-end crashes, Consider installation of traffic signals with a right turn pocket as indicated in crash records with protected right turns, and consider Road Safety Audit recommendations. Sightline from Lamont Rd into Newmarket Rd disrupted by railway overpass non-transparent anti-throw barrier for approaching vehicles. At stop bar, visibility is favoured by Lamont Rd's location on top of crest on Newmarket Rd. Immediate Power poles close to kerb creating visibility and potential serious crash issues. Lutwyche Rd / Maygar St Signage on Gympie Rd into Maygar St to specify "Left Lane Only Consider installation of advanced signage on Lutwyche Road, Immediate Turns Left" southern approach, indicating"Left Lane Only Turns Left". There is no signage in the centre median at the intersection of Fuller Street and Lutwyche Road to advise drives of left turn only onto Lutwyche Road. Lutwyche Road/ Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit Vehicles are allowed to park near the intersection of Fuller Street Fuller Street recommendations and Lutwyche Road. This restricts the sight distance available to drivers pulling out of the driveway and having to cross over to the opposing lane to pass. There is a Immediate No stop treatment at intersection of Flower Rd and Maygar Street. There is a risk vehicles will fail to stop and give right of way resulting in a vehicle collision. Maygar Street/ Flower Road Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit Also due to the steep gradient along Flower Road on the recommendations approach to the intersection, there is a risk drivers will misinterpret the intersection location and having to apply brakes heavily to stop in time. Failing to stop in time can result in the vehicle travelling onto Maygar Street and colliding with other vehicles. Maygar Street/Brook Street Although left turn only sign provided at Brook Street intersecting with Maygar Street, the island arrangement allows sufficient space for vehicles to travel straight. Very difficult to see oncoming vehicles for pedestrians trying to cross the road to access the bus stop on the other side at Maygar Street and Brook Street intersection. vehicle. Due to the crest prior to Brook Street along Maygar Street, there is a risk drivers will not be able to sight a stopped vehicle wanting to turn right into Brook Street. Currently parking is not restricted in the marked shoulder next to the embankment along Maygar Street near Brook Street. There is limited sight distance for vehicles turning left onto Maygar Street from Brook Street to see oncoming vehicles. The pedestrian green walk indicator is not functioning on the south-west corner of the Stafford Road/ Richmond Street intersection. Immediate Stafford Road/ Consider implementation of Road Safety Audit At the Stafford Road/ Richmond Street intersection a driveway is Richmond Street recommendations located on the north side of the intersection. Traffic leaving this driveway is not able to observe traffic phases for movements along Stafford. Sight distance at Days Road (travelling southbound) is limited and presents an uncomfortable situation for the driver. Drivers are unable to identify oncoming traffic until after entering the carriageway. Visibility is restricted in both directions by adjacent properties and on-street parking. Develop a scheme to improve traffic safety and movement for Wilston vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for Days Road and consider Immediate Road/Days Road Risk of conflicts between turning and through traffic at the implementation of Road Safety Audit Recommendations intersection. Improve intersection. Extend median to prevent N/B traffic to continue up Wilston Rd The need for “No Through Road” provision at Wilston/Days intersection needs to be reviewed.. Wilston Road/Murrell Street & Wilston Road/Mina Parade Sight distance to the north from Murrell Street is limited due to the level crossing infrastructure. Road markings such as the 'Keep Clear' stop bars have faded. Kerbside lanes frequently used for parking. Markings do not indicate a lane drop and do not clearly divert traffic. Risk of car crash into parked cars realised along Newmarket Road. Power poles close to kerb creating visibility issues. Ramp not aligned with crossing at intersection Signal timing encourages non-local traffic Pavement arrows on the eastern leg of the Days Road intersection are worn and may cause confusion about turning designations at the intersection. All linemarking at the intersection is starting to wear and fade. Geometry for dual right turns northbound is tight for two vehicles simultaneously turning, particularly large vehicles (there is a bus route that uses this movement). Vehicles in the outside lane were observed crossing guide lines and into adjacent lane. Days Rd / Grange Rd There is a risk of side swipe collisions for northbound vehicles turning right from Days Road. Consider intersection enhancements to improve efficiency of operation and safety. Implement Road Safety Audit Recommendations. During peak periods, congestion of the northbound left turn from Days Road into Grange Road may result in through movements on Days Road (eastbound) travelling in the westbound lane opposing traffic (due to driver impatience) A large amount of roadside furniture is located within the clear zone at the intersection. The bus route that travels through the Days Road intersection and onto Thomas Street was observed to cause issues during peak hour traffic due to a combination of narrow geometry and proximity of Thomas Street to the intersection. Risk of buses clipping vehicles in keep clear zone Document1 Draft Page 5 High Wilston Grange Precinct Study Transport Engineering Studies The heavy vehicle route sign located at the Grange Road intersection, travelling westbound, is not in an obvious location (located on signal mast arm). Potential for heavy vehicles to travel through to Colston Road. There is limited sight distance available from the pedestrian crossing at the Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection due to the crossing location relative to the shop front.. Days Road/ Kedron Brook Road The Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection caters for a high number of on road cyclists. The westbound intersection approach has on road parking very close to the roundabout. The Days Road / Kedron Brook Road intersection caters for a high number of on road cyclists. The intersection approaches have narrow lanes widths and no shoulder. Remove roundabout and install traffic signals to achieve more efficient operation, and improve movement and crossing safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
