ROUTE (IN SURGERY): Intrajoint injection, opthalmic injection DOSAGE (ADULT): per MD order SIDE EFFECTS: (2 MOST COMMON AND 2 MOST SERIOUS): hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. HOW IT IS USED IN SURGERY: Viscosupplementation is a procedure that involves the injection of gel-like substances (hyaluronates) into a joint to supplement the viscous properties of synovial fluid. Currently, hyaluronate injections are approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee in those who have failed to respond to more conservative therapy. Use for other joints is being investigated. Same for replacement of the vitreous humor in the eye.
