ROLE SPECIFIC INFORMATION AND CHALLENGES
Course teams are supported by staff that work directly with students within their learning environments.
Technician Demonstrators are available during the working day to support students in the use of
specialised equipment and work areas. They also assist in the management of resources.
On a day-to-day basis the Technician Demonstrator works with MA and BA students and will take daily
direction from the Course Leader. Line management structure, however, is through the Senior Technician
for the School, or directly to the Faculty Technical Manager if a Senior Technician is not in appointment,
who will undertake Staff Performance Reviews and will have oversight of Health & Safety issues and the
work of all Technician Demonstrators in the School.
The Post requires an adaptable person, able to provide a wide range of services and support in a busy
and demanding environment.
The post holder should maintain an up-to-date knowledge of their specialist professional and vocational
area, participating in training and development activities to ensure efficient provision of service and
continued self-development.
The post holder must
 provide support to increasingly independent learners

 support the development of courses within art and design
 respond appropriately to change
 discharge departmental duties in resource management.

PURPOSE



To provide workshops, demonstrations and instruction to students on all relevant equipment and
software in relation to the course, to ensure that they have the opportunities to be adequately trained
and supported in the appropriate techniques, software and photographic processes necessary for
the individual/course projects including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, After
Effects, Capture One, Lightroom, Nikon ViewNX, Camera control Pro.
To ensure that the learning environment is equipped including IT suites, Studios and Photographic
studios and that learners are competent in the use of machines and equipment including DSLR
cameras.
To observe and implement health and safety responsibilities as specified within the AUB’s Health ad
Safety Policy and as directed by the Faculty Technical Manager

To provide demonstrations, support and tuition in techniques, processes and safe practise
to groups of students to enable them to develop competence in their application and to
monitor effectiveness of individual planning and workload priorities
To provide workshops, demonstrations and instruction on new and existing equipment,
processes and techniques
To deliver Health and Safety and Technical Operations induction programmes to students
with particular reference to studio and workshop usage in order to ensure safe working
practices in accordance with the University’s Health & Safety Policy
To ensure effective maintenance and cleaning of specialised machinery and equipment and
assist in the coordination of inventories as required
To plan and develop training programmes to include the preparation of technical handouts
required in support of projects, curriculum development and documentation
To contribute to annual course reports, reviews, Skillset monitoring and Quality inspection
visits
To construct and adapt resource area equipment, teaching aids, models or samples in order
that teaching and exhibition areas are equipped appropriately and to a professional
standard
To provide appropriate organisational, technical and student support for live project work
according to the requirements of the Head of School, Faculty Technical Manager and
Course Leader
To advise and provide detailed documentation to support the renewal of all materials,
equipment and annual capital bids. Maintain stocks and keep appropriate budgetary records
To assist the Course Leader, Senior Technician and Faculty Technical Manager in the
effective and efficient operation of the School in whatever manner deemed appropriate and
to undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required by the University, for
example, contributes to the decision-making processes regarding new technological
delivery for the curricula, associated budgetary considerations and other matters
To maintain individual student records of attendance and attainment
To assist the Marketing, Short Course and International departments with the design and
production of recruitment and marketing materials
To work collaboratively, efficiently and effectively as a member of a team and on own
initiative to ensure all technician related operations of the course including MA, are
delivered to a high standard

students to use public transport when arriving at the campus. Applicants travelling by rail should arrive at
Bournemouth Central Station where there is a regular bus service from the station (Yellow Bus 6 or
Unilinx U3) and a taxi rank. Parking at the University is limited and we can only guarantee car parking to
visitors coming for an interview who have mobility problems. However, if you are travelling by car we
have a drop off point at the main entrance, or you could park locally in Winton, which is on a bus route to
and from the University.
Employees have to purchase a parking permit to use the parking facilities. Employees who live within a
1.5 mile radius of the University will not be eligible for a car-parking permit. NB: there are some
exemptions for those with disabilities and during pregnancy (please enquire).
