Allowable Dictionaries for STAAR and STAAR L English dictionary- contains definitions of English Words ESL dictionary- define words using simpler English Allowed for grade 6 and up for reading and writing as part of STAAR dictionary policy and is NOT considered a linguistic accommodation. Is considered a linguistic accommodation below grade 6. If used for reading and writing test, student is not eligible for exit from Bilingual/ESL program. May be used as a linguistic accommodation for math and science and be considered for exit. May not be used on STAAR L Dictionary access is to be provided for all students in grade 6 and up as part of STAAR dictionary policy. Bilingual dictionary- used to translate words (and sometimes common phrases) from one language to another Allowable for STAAR and STAAR L (any subject) Allowed for grade 6 and up for reading and writing as part of STAAR dictionary policy and is NOT considered a linguistic accommodation Considered a linguistic accommodation for math, science, and social studies (all grades) Considered a linguistic accommodation for grades 3-5 reading and grade 4 writing May include pictures as long as pictures do not illustrate content terminology or concepts Picture dictionary- conveys word meaning through drawings or photos; includes only words that can be pictured Allowable for STAAR reading and writing only Considered a linguistic accommodation for grade 3 and up May be monolingual, bilingual, or multilingual (may show picture plus word in one language or more than one language) Monolingual dictionary- Single-language standard (definition) dictionary in a language other than English (e.g., dictionary of Spanish language, dictionary of Vietnamese language) Allowable for STAAR reading and writing only Considered a linguistic accommodation in grade 3 and up LEP students for whom the LPAC has recommended linguistic accommodations on the STAAR reading and writing test may not be considered for exit. http://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/accommodations/
