Additionally, with cold and flu season beginning,
our Kleenex supply is almost gone. We will
appreciate any donations. Thanks!
Our first quarter field trip was a huge success.
An upcoming field trip is scheduled for March
25th. Students will attend plays at Ovens
Auditorium. This time the focus is on
mathematics, and we will be visited by the likes
of Einstein, Ada Lovelace, Pythagoras, and
Pascal. This is a Eureka! Classics Production
presented by the Chamber Theatre. Parents can
visit www.chambertheatre.com for more info.
Honors Cards for first quarter grades will be
distributed during a school assembly on Friday,
December 6, from 10:30 to 11:00 in the gym.
On the same day, students who earned Honor
Cards will have the privilege of watching a
movie in their second and fourth block classes.
Below is an overview of what your child will be
learning in the 2nd quarter.
LANGUAGE ARTS
(Ms. Horton, Ms. Eplion, Ms. McMurray,
and Ms. Sellers)
During first quarter, language arts classes
focused on understanding literary text (genres,
literary elements/devices). At the end of the
quarter, students completed a culminating
argumentative writing task to answer the
question “What makes a story memorable?” For
second quarter our focus will be on
understanding writers (text features/structures,
author’s purpose, poetry, informational text, and
folklore). Argumentative and Expository writing
will be the focus. Furthermore, we want to ask
parents to check your child’s agenda
consistently. They are utilizing it in their
classrooms, and it is a great resource for
communicate.
MATH
(Ms. Seward, Ms. Eplion, Mrs.
Turkdamar, Mr. Walker, and Ms. Mills)
One quarter down and three to go! In Math 7,
we began the 2nd quarter by wrapping up
Variables and Patterns with an investigation of
the graphing calculator. We are currently
extending our understanding of tables, graphs,
and equations through the Moving Straight
Ahead unit. We will end the MSA unit with an
in depth look at multi-step equations. The last
unit of the quarter will be Stretching and
Shrinking which investigates similar figures and
scale factors. Students need to be consistent in
attendance and completing their homework, now
more than ever. Calculators are now allowed in
the units we are studying so students need to
come prepared.
Parents, Ms Eplion would like for you to
encourage and support your child in reviewing
their daily math instruction at home. This would
be so beneficial to their success in math class.
SCIENCE
(Ms. Lloyd and Mrs. Rollins)
We are currently studying three types of heat
transfer: radiation, convection and conduction.
In the 2nd quarter we will be studying all about
the atmosphere, its composition, the layers,
pollution and the ozone layer, global warming
and then moving onto weather, clouds, global
and local winds. We are gearing up to complete
assignments at school and home on
Pendalearning.com. Be on the lookout for
additional information coming soon.
Our class novels this quarter include the
following: All of the Above, Bronx
Masquerade, Tangerine, Among the Hidden,
Esperanza Rising, Night, Freak the Mighty, Out
of my Mind, Forged by Fire, and The Fat Boy
Chronicles. This will help towards attaining
their personal reading goals. Parents, please
make sure your child is reading their individual
novels at least 30 minutes nightly.

SOCIAL STUDIES
(Ms. Thorn and Mr. Hayes)
Throughout the second quarter, students will be
learning about different revolutionary
movements, including the Enlightenment,
Scientific Revolution, and the English
Revolution and Civil War. We will also cover
the French and American revolutions and the
Agricultural and Industrial revolutions in the
United States and Europe. Moving away from
specific facts and dates this year, we are getting
students to focus more on the understanding of
overarching historical themes.
