Provide a concise explanation of how the following goal is a “significant focus” of the proposed course.
Goal Area 5: History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences
Develop understanding of human societies and behaviors, and of the concepts, theories, and methods of
history and the social sciences.
Minorities participation in the aviation industry from the 1700s-2000s ( women are considered a
minority in aviation) is divided into decades across three centuries. Overlaid within each decade are the affects of
polical, societal, cultural, & economical forces, among others, which affected underrepresented populations of
men and women from gaining access to aviation as a career and/or hobby. Students come to understand how the
extent and power of each force had different meanings at different times throughout history and how they affected
the aviation industry's perceptions of minorities' roles within it. Since there is no defining book on the history of
minorities in aviation, students produce a packet of aviation history from which the public might begin to explore
the topic. The packet must encompass an overview of all decades noted above and how societal forces affected
minorities' roles within aviation.
13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 5, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning
outcomes (SLOs) below. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course.
1. Describe or use the methods and data by which historians, social scientists, or behavioral scientists investigate
human conditions.
2. Analyze human behavior, cultures, and social institutions and processes from the perspectives of history or the
social and behavioral sciences.
3. Develop explanations for and explore solutions to historical or contemporary social problems.
4. Reflect upon themselves in relation to family, communities, society, culture, and/or their histories.
5. Apply and critique alternative explanatory systems or theories about human societies and behaviors.
14.
Discuss how each Student Learning Outcome checked above is achieved in this course. (Note: Although
descriptions of typical assignments or types of assignments may be part of this discussion, it is not
appropriate to submit copies of actual assignments.)
SLO 2, SLO 3, & SLO 5-Packet Project of Minorities participation in avation, Review/analyzation of
biography or autobiography of famous minority in aviation, debates on 4 key topics concerning minoritiy
particpation in aviation, on-line D2L discussion forums where students must bring critical thinking skills
to issues which minorities face/d in aviation. Students are also asked to role play and take on a mindset of
12/11/2009
of another gender/ race-- Example: White male student pretends he is 1930s Black female pilot, and
reflect what that person would have experienced.
SLO-4-D2L on-line discussions where students must reflect on values learned within family of origin
and how those values affect their perceptions of minority roles in aviation today.
Biography/Autobiography review must bring in examples within this arena.
15.
List or attach the Course Outline (adequately described and including percentage of time to be allocated
to each topic). Curriculum Committees may request additional information. Topics larger than 20% need
to be broken down further. Indicate in your course outline where the Student Learning Outcomes
checked above are being met.
All of the SLOs checked are covered to some extent in each of the topic areas.
Expectations of minorities "place" in society from 1700-2000
Society's expectations of White men's roles in assisting minorities with access to aviation
experience
Religious, political, cultural, legal forces, etc which affected minorities access to aviation
Physical, psychological, and emotional forces minorities face/d in entering aviation
Military culture which has affected avation industry and thus minorities entry into field
Students compare/contrast the roles expected of men and women today with the forces
encountered down through the first 3 centuries of minority participation in aviation
How aviation carers have affected choices women must make in family/children issues
Reflections on student family of origin values vs. society's expectations of minority roles
