Daryl Lee Martin Scholarship Students who will be entering as college freshmen in the fall of this year and live in Fayette or a surrounding county are eligible for this $500 award. The scholarship is named for Daryl Martin, a young man who lost his life in an automobile accident in August 1998. He was a native of Versailles, Kentucky and a graduate of Woodford County High School. He held degrees from Vanderbilt University and Eastern Kentucky University. He was employed by the YMCA of Central Kentucky as a Program Director for the South Lexington branch and was widely involved in youth sports activities in Lexington. All applications will be reviewed by members of the Daryl Lee Martin Endowment Fund Committee. The Starting Gate is a fun and educational afterschool program for middle school students in central Kentucky. The Starting Gate motivates kids to think about their futures and what it will take to achieve their individual goals through reading, drama, games, homework help and lots of focus on the student. Educational adventures also get students out and about for new and exciting experiences. Students will have fun while finding their own path to achieving their personal best in school and life. Senior Requirements: All student volunteers must be entering their senior year in high school. Additionally, all volunteers must have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. as well as good attendance and behavior. Student volunteers will serve as role models and mentors to middle school students while assisting with academic activities and homework. In exchange for one school year of service, two nights per week, each senior will receive a $500 scholarship to be used for tuition at their chosen college or university. Students may work one night per week for $250. Student Commitment: Students volunteering for the Starting Gate Program will need to sign an unofficial contract. All parties, including the school, parents, students and Starting Gate must agree to the following: Students will commit to work on either Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday (two nights per week); 4-6PM (Lexington schools) 3:30-5:30 PM (Paris) Students will provide their own transportation.
