Sotterley Show Weekend Well what a week end for the branch, firstly the gales took the marquee for a walk round the park and thanks to the attentions of Miles Barne who helped Tim and Judy to rescue the tents and their contents disaster was averted! Then Saturday saw the very happy news of several members getting married; Natalie Whyte married Ben Myhill, Natalie was a member for many years and we wish them much happiness. The hunt and the branch joined in the celebrations of Billie Smith and Sam Fobbester who also were married on Saturday both Billie and Sam were members and we have continued to see them not least Sam in his task of whipper-in for the Harriers, again we wish them every happiness. How lucky we were with the weather on Sunday ‘perfect’ was how several competitors described it the show ground looked magnificent. Ring One Sponsored by St Felix School and Judged by Christine Williams Classes one to three all went to member Imogen Sheldrake on Pocket Rocket on the back of a seasons hunting Imogen gave ‘Toffee’ a lovely ride. Class four the much coveted claret jug ‘Bram Valley Trophy 14.2hh’ was hotly contested with Lydia Sida-Page and the experienced Idole Des Chouans (causing the commentator some problems in pronunciation) running out the winners so good to see many of our younger members really ‘going for it’ in the jump off. Charlotte Cattermole battled it out with her little sister Georgia for class 5 with experience triumphant and Georgia having to settle for second place. Class 5 went to Amy Kemp with team trainer Mike Hallows on his lovely mare coming third behind Flynn Regan. The open went to member Ellie Peel on Cruising Ghost the only clear round, looking at the trophy it really is a “who’s who” of the branch well done Ellie. Ring Two our second jumping ring run by Gillian Bennett Members picked up several placings in a well run ring with lots of encouragement from Gillian, and several inexperienced combinations having a go for the first time, Paula Block wrapping up the day on her young horse who was out for a ‘look-see’ and jumped clear to take the last class. Ring Three working Hunters Judged by International Showing Star Wendy King Numbers in the first two classes were limited with Otterley Mitchell on her sisters horse being the only open class competitor forward however Mrs King gave them their full run of experience for this promising young horse, Alexa Regis took the championship with her lovely all round pony club pony Steehorse Elegance who we will see in action at the areas later in the summer. Ring Four Judged by Mrs J Kilbey Ring four hosted the Best Turned Out/Marriages/Pony Club Pony and Mountain and Moorland classes and was busy all day. Ring Five Judged by Mr N Birkenhead With no entries forward in the lead rein or large riding pony it was left to the small riding pony and the winner of the riding horse and ridden hunter to battle it out for the championship with dressage team regular Imogen SidaPage standing top with Inform to Alice Able and ‘Billy’ Ring Six Judged by Kate Kincaid Again Imogen and the 23 year old Inform battled out the championship standing behind Martha Craggs and Pebbly Outback who gave a flawless performance in the small coloured class to take the championship in this ring, another combination who we will see at the areas later this summer. The ring then hosted the TARRA classes for thoroughbreds who have finished their racing career and are being retrained for another job. Ring Seven was where the real action took place Judged by an ‘Old Girl’ of the branch Mrs Sarah Hancock this proved the most competitive of the day with wild athleticism in the Horse and Hound; the members were cut-throat in their ambition to take the H&H title with Victoria Burgess triumphant the smallest dog as usual was Lydia’s Clara who improved her form to fourth! Clara has contested this event for the last six years never managing higher than seventh! She was pipped to a top three place by Alice Able who runs like the wind and Amy Graham! Sarah then had the difficult task of deciding which pony she wanted to take home choosing Hettie’s dear little grey who later wizzed off to the gymkhana ring.
