LIU-PM-MIN-0192

LIU project team meeting

Notes from the meeting held on 03 September 2015

EDMS 1537910

Present: J. Coupard, A. Funken, B. Goddard, K. Hanke, M. Meddahi, S. Gilardoni, B.

Mikulec, M. Vretenar

Excused: G. Rumolo

Matters arising

Last meeting dedicated to LIU-PS

S. Gilardoni presented all WPs, TT2 has now been included in LIU-PS (renovation of all PCs, but not magnets (yet))

Ring BLMs: some budget is missing but can be re-shuffled

S. Gilardoni mentions that there was a MSWG on BLMs last Friday, for the PSB under control but for the PS many things unclear (cabling)

Chamonix dates confirmed (25-29 January); organization committee put in place; one full session for LIU, subjects to be discussed

 upcoming council week, CTC to be approved

Work status for each LIU machine

L4 – M. Vretenar

M. Vretenar presented an updated Linac4 long-term master plan 2017-20) ( slides )

 several overlaps with activities in PSB and PS

2017 spare time for HST

 the plan is to keep the HST dump for the commissioning of the transfer line and debuncher; B. Mikulec points out that EN-STI (D. Grenier) considers the dump not appropriate for this activity and he does not want to irradiate this dump more than unavoidable as it serves as a dump for LBE; an operational scenario needs to be agreed by RP, EN-STI and Linac4.

 reliability run during most of 2017, no beam operation in 2018; end 2018 recommissioning; connection during 7 months end 2018/beginning 2019; beam to

LBE Q3 2019; afterwards shutdown until start-up mid-2020

 ion source is running, slightly above 50 mA

 preparation of DTL for 50 MeV tests ongoing; slowly approaching the 50 MeV milestones

2 more months of delay with the PIMS; could impact on the planning for the HST

PSB – K. Hanke

 t oday’s meeting focused on schedules (Julie) and rack integration for Finemet cavities

 news from Finemet, review and rehearsal session are in preparation; possibility to replace also the C16 system by the wideband Finemet system (being worked on – t.b.c.)

CET: present spending 47%

 bldg. 245 good progress

1

BLM issues close to being sorted out (specification document for electronics had been blocked by R. Steerenberg – new version will be circulated soon)

 new fellow arrived for HST

O. Berrig had stopped an ECR for the BI line; his proposal was mainly turned down at the last WG meeting; B. Mikulec will nevertheless discuss parts of the proposal

(addition of one steerer) at the injection working group

 started working on safety package part 1

 tune pick up was found to have problems with low intensity beams; BI is discussing internally; might have to include it in LIU

PS

– S. Gilardoni

 first proof that the long damper is working; a lot of work remains to be done

 discussions ongoing with RF for the support of transverse damper

SPS – B. Goddard

good progress with RF 200 MHz on several fronts o BAF3 infrastructure, Driver pre-series tests giving good results, 300 series amplifiers for January 2016, Final amplifiers contract to be approved this coming

FC (thanks to FB, TL, ...), Power coupler and transmission line design starting, first cavity under construction, LSS3 space reservation in progress. o low level Functional Specification, completed and circulated, to release in EDMS this week. o will be an Internal Review on 24th September https://indico.cern.ch/event/441763/

impedance reduction of vacuum flanges o baseline reviewed and confirmed: QF SSS to be done in EYETS and LS2, plus aC coating to minimise opening. if aC coating needed of MBBs and QDs, will be done after LS2 o simulations clearly showing significant improvement in stability thresholds for single bunches, but not yet done for trains of 12 bunches in single/double RF system, which will be key result. o also highlighted issues with grounding, loops, insulated flanges and RF bypasses: have a kick-off meeting for a small WG to understand all the issues and define the actions: involves many teams (OP, RF, MSC, VSC, BI, ABT, ABP,

...).

SPS beam dump o IEFC presentation tomorrow to endorse 'abandoning' the upgrade of the preset

TIDVG o technically good progress, checking now aperture with ion injection in LSS1

(after removing dogleg). Concern about manpower vanishing from STI (FLUKA, thermomechanical) and RP. o integration fully in progress, aiming for end of 2015 to complete. Decabling well defined and in hand. Relocation of all LSS5 systems and new LSS1 configuration being detailed.

protection devices o TCDI HiRadMat tests and prototype in progress o TPSG redesign being validated o TEDs could still be a problem o again concern about STI resources for the next 18 months.

Kickers o MKE4 rearrangement continuing and still looks good for this coming YETS

2

o MKP improvements look more and more necessary (again problems during

COLDEX MD this tuesday), still working on defining how to improve

BI: will produce a 'reduced' set of specifications from the various sources which presently exist.

aC/scrubbing review https://indico.cern.ch/event/433608/ next week (8th) with long agenda and wrap-up for 1h on 9th. Will have a short summary of the proposed strategy - which is going to be QF SSS coating in EYETS/LS2, plus continuation of development of the in-situ MBB coating - have to keep this alive if we have to do it in LS3.

EVM rebaselining: completed and updated. New cost profile developed until 2020, total reduced by 5 MCHF at 71 MCHF. Spending (commitment) is at 75% of the revised 2015 total (as defined in June). Big step in 2016 to 11.5 MCHF from 3.5

MCHF this year.

IONS

– S. Gilardoni

LEIR went back to some reasonable intensity

RF problem should have been fixed during TS

 injection and setting up in the PS ongoing

 once this is accomplished proceed with MDs

EVM: only part which is missing is P. Baudrenghien

Technical coordination – J. Coupard

J. Coupard showed master schedule for LS2 ( slides )

 kept time for PSB (15.5 m)

PS (7 + 4.5) m; added 3 m

SPS added 8 w, total 18 m

 hw tests in the PSB 4 m plus cold check-out (total 5 m)

 long term global schedule until 2035 ( link )

 fellow arrived last Tuesday to work on L4/PSB

 review planning in the working groups for the individual machines; machine superintendents to check.

Safety

– A. Funken

 the list of SPC is nearly complete, missing on e is for the Ions SP “SPS RF”

 a meeting took place for the SPS SP “RF Systems Upgrades” mi-August with E.

Montesinos and J. Coupard; they prefer to prepare themselves a first draft for the descriptive part and the preliminary list of hazards as there are still options which are not chosen or still confidential; a follow up meeting will be organized end of

September.

 the preparation of the documents for all other SPs will be started now after the summer period; as reminded by Malika, the documents for the MKE4 rearrangement (part of SP “SPS Ring”) will be the first priority as the works are scheduled end of this year; B. Goddard is waiting to be contacted for the SPS

Ring; A. Funken will do it end of September after having prepared a first skeleton

AOB

Next general meeting on 17 September, with dedicated to the LS2 presentations of Julie.

LIU-IONS meeting on Monday 21 st September, 9:00 to 10:00, CCC glass box (TBC).
