African American Student Success
Action Plan
Barbara Jordan Elementary Campus
Lucy Hopkins, Principal
1
Please provide a brief overview of your needs assessment and your campus plan of
action.
Our demographics from the Campus Data Packet reveal that 16.1% are African American, 83.4% Hispanic
and .5% White. In addition 97.7% are Economically Disadvantaged, 65.4% are LEP, 6.8% Special
Education and 7.9% Talented and Gifted. Our data indicates a need for all subject areas to continue to
focus on Reading and Math in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary development and oral language
development in order for students to be academically successful and prepared for the state and normreferenced assessments in the spring. The campus will need to provide staff development for all teachers
in effective teaching strategies for English language learners, African Americans, At-Risk students, and
Special Education in reading achievement and mathematics.
Our analysis indicates our needs as follows:
 Increased student achievement in Reading and Math
 Increased African American student, community, and parent involvement
 Increase the number of African American students attending early-chilldhood program
 Increase the student attendance in tutoring and enrichment programs.
Our campus plan of action is as follows:
 Ensure that students are receiving appropriate RtI interventions that are properly documented.
 Increase communication with African American parents, students and community members.
 Provided additional professional development on teacher understanding of emotional and social
changes that may impact learning for African American students.
 Provide mentor/mentee programs for African American students.
