African American Student Success Action Plan Barbara Jordan Elementary Campus Lucy Hopkins, Principal 1 Please provide a brief overview of your needs assessment and your campus plan of action. Our demographics from the Campus Data Packet reveal that 16.1% are African American, 83.4% Hispanic and .5% White. In addition 97.7% are Economically Disadvantaged, 65.4% are LEP, 6.8% Special Education and 7.9% Talented and Gifted. Our data indicates a need for all subject areas to continue to focus on Reading and Math in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary development and oral language development in order for students to be academically successful and prepared for the state and normreferenced assessments in the spring. The campus will need to provide staff development for all teachers in effective teaching strategies for English language learners, African Americans, At-Risk students, and Special Education in reading achievement and mathematics. Our analysis indicates our needs as follows: Increased student achievement in Reading and Math Increased African American student, community, and parent involvement Increase the number of African American students attending early-chilldhood program Increase the student attendance in tutoring and enrichment programs. Our campus plan of action is as follows: Ensure that students are receiving appropriate RtI interventions that are properly documented. Increase communication with African American parents, students and community members. Provided additional professional development on teacher understanding of emotional and social changes that may impact learning for African American students. Mathematics Achievement 4th Grade (60.0%) were both above the district average 5th Grade AA made a 21.2% gain on percentage meeting the Standards on the STAAR Math test. Second Grade AA increased 5.5% at or above 40% on the ITBS Math. Priorities What are the priorities for the campus? Kindergarten (28.6%), 2nd grade (45.8%), and 2nd grade (44.4%) were all below the district average. 4th grade (50.0%) and 3rd grade (45.5%) were both below the district average. Increase the percentage of students at or above 40th percentile ITBS /STAAR by 10%. 3rd grade (27.3%) was below the district average.
