SEPTEMBER TEKIAH INSERT
2 ways to “read, learn, write”: the full verse or the ikar (the most essential part) which
is in bold. This month the first verse is so short, the entire verse is the ikar!
Read: Deuteronomy 6:4
.‫וָה* אֶ חַָד‬-‫ַיְ ה‬,‫וָה* אֱ ֹלהֵ ינּו‬-‫ַיְ ה‬:‫יִ ְׁש ָראֵ ל‬, ‫ְׁשמַע‬
Sh’ma, Yisrael: Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.
Learn: Practice reading the verse in Hebrew. In translation, the verse means:
“Hear, O Israel! Adonai is our God, Adonai is One!”

*The yud-hey-vav-hey name of God is holy and must not be destroyed. There is a dash in the middle
of the name of God here to protect the Name from being written and then destroyed. Know that the
dash does not appear in the Torah, though it appears in between the letters in the “read” and “write”
sections. When you write the name of God, please write it with respect or consider practicing the
