Lectures will cover recent topics in this area followed by class discussion of the topic. In addition, each student will be assigned a series of articles related to the topics that will be covered during the semester in lecture to stimulate and broaden class discussion. Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Discuss recent advances in health sciences technology. 2. Predict future trends and issues in the health sciences based on current developments. Topics Covered: The primary purpose of this course is to expose students to the latest advances in health sciences technology. Specific topics will be dictated by current articles dealing with trends and issues in health sciences. These topics will include the latest developments in medical technology and technologies in other areas of the health sciences as well as any issues raised by these new technologies, new drug development and the results of field trials on new drugs and medical technologies, and how these developments and issues will impact personnel needs in the health sciences. Due to the survey nature of this course, many modules are of a stand alone nature, and rely little on the preceding module. Texts: None Grading/evaluation Method: The student will be assigned grades based on performance in this course as reflected by their participation in class discussions and their scores on 2 exams, a research paper, and a defense. o o o o o Both exams Discussions Research Paper Defense Writing test 100 pts 50 pts 50 pts 50 pts 50 pts Grading scale: A = greater than or equal to 94% A- = greater than or equal to 90% B+= greater than or equal to 87% B = greater than or equal to 84% B- = greater than or equal to 80% C+= greater than or equal to 77% C = greater than or equal to 70% D = greater than or equal to 60% F < less than 60% Exams: There are two essay exams which are open-resource with a one week time limit. Proper English grammar is expected and will be marked off for if not utilized. Discussions: The expectations and grading criteria for discussion assignments are listed under the heading "How Discussions will be Graded". I'll be looking for certain qualities in your primary posting, along with a quantitative 100-word minimum, proper use of English grammar, timely submission, and most importantly an understanding of the question asked. You are also required to substantively respond at least twice to other students either by asking or answering questions. Research Paper: The expectations and grading criteria for the research paper are listed under the heading "Research Paper and How It Will Be Graded". Writing test: In Module 1 you will be required to write a 1000 word essay about the FDA and the drug approval process. This will be an original essay written in your own words. This essay will allow me to gage your writing abilities and refer you to the UWF writing lab as early in the semester as possible if needed. It will also allow me to gage how well you are digesting the course material. Defense (Discussion Assignment): Students will take a position in favor of or opposing the an alternative therapies and write an essay (1000 words). Your peers will respond to your thesis, and you will defend yourself against their inquires and objections. Please evaluate the position of two other students and respond to them. Special Technology Utilized by Students: Microsoft Word, PC use for web surfing - high speed internet connection strongly advised.
