Conventions of the Language
A Standards-Based Grammar & Composition Unit
Communication Arts – Grade 7

Objectives
Sentence Types
Students will be able to identify the essential parts of the four sentence structures and be able to punctuate
them correctly: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex.
Phrases & Punctuation
Using a variety of phrases, students will be able to improve style, combine ideas, write concisely and add
clarity to their writing. Students will be able to punctuate phrases correctly.
Conjunctions & Clauses
Students will be able to use three different types of conjunctions: coordinating, correlative, and subordinating
to transition from on ideas to the next. Students will punctuate sentences correctly.
Pronoun Usage
Students will be able to differentiate between nominative case and objective case pronouns and be able to use
correct grammar in a sentence.
