COURSE DESCRIPTION:
DEVM F060: First year high school algebra. Evaluating and simplifying algebraic expressions,
solving first degree equations and inequalities, integer exponents, polynomials, factoring,
rational expressions, equations and graphs of lines. PREREQUISITE: Grade of C or better in
DEVM F050 or appropriate placement test scores.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The student will be able to:
- set up numerical and algebraic expressions.
- determine whether a number is prime, composite, or neither.
- work the basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) using
integers.
- work the basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) using
rational numbers.
- solve problems using positive integer exponents.
- translate applications from English to Algebra.
- solve first-degree equations and their applications.
- solve inequalities and compound inequalities and their applications.
- set up ratios, proportions, and percents and solve their applications.
- set up formulas and solve their applications.
- work the basic math operations using polynomials.
- solve problems using zero or negative integer exponents.
- factor by using the distributive property, the difference of two squares, and un-FOIL-ing.
- simplify algebraic fractions.
- work the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) using algebraic
fractions.
- solve fractional equations and their applications.
- graph linear equations and their applications.
-graph linear equations and inequalities.

- solve linear equations by graphing, by the elimination-by-addition method, and by the
substitution method.
- simplify roots and radicals.
- work products and quotients involving radicals.
- solve radical equations.
- solve quadratic equations and their applications by completing the square and the quadratic
formula.

Chapters 1-10; Some Basic Concepts of Arithmetic and Algebra; Real Numbers; E quations,
Inequalities, and Problem Solving; Formulas and Problem Solving; Exponents and Polynomials;
Factoring, Solving Equations, and Problem Solving; Algebraic Fractions; Coordinate Geometry
and Linear Systems; Roots and Radicals; Quadratic Equations.

COURSE POLICIES:
Attendance/Participation is REQUIRED! You get one unexcused absence. In class you are either
recorded as present or absent. This also means: BE ON TIME.
Every student begins with 100% in their attendance calculation, however, each absence will
count as a deduction using the following guidelines:
1 absence = 97%
4 absences = 85%
7 absences = 70%
2 absences = 94%
5 absences = 80%
8 absences = 65%
3 absences = 90%
6 absences =75%
9 absences = 60%
and so on down the line…
EVALUATION AND GRADING:
Most assignments will be graded during class time so that a student receives daily feedback on
performance. Assignments are due when homework is collected in class. If you come to class
after grading has begun, your homework will be marked as late. Late assignments are not
graded! A makeup assignment from a 1 class absence is due no later than the second class
following the absence, however, makeup assignments from extended absences must be
arranged by the student with the Instructor. Otherwise, missing assignments receive a 0%.
Assignments more than 2 weeks old are not graded.
After the fourth, eighth and twelfth weeks of semester, all students will be required to have a 15
minute check-in session with the Instructor to get verbal feedback for the class.
