Background information:
 Oxford Art Online is the access point for Grove Art Online, the Benezit Dictionary of
Artists, and other Oxford art reference resources.
 The Benezit Dictionary of Artists is a landmark European reference work in Art History. It
provides fully comprehensive coverage on artists across all media, from painters and
sculptors to calligraphers, ceramicists, illustrators, installation artists, performance artists
and other. Includes images of artists’ signatures, monograms and stamps of sale
 This English-language edition, published in 2006, is an update on the 1999 fourth edition
of this historical publication, the first edition of which came out in three volumes in 19111920.
 With entries on nearly 170,000 artists (Grove Art Online has 23,000+ biographies),
revisions and new biographies exclusively available online, and more than 11,000
images of artists signatures, monograms, and stamps of sale, the Benezit Dictionary of
Artists is one of the most comprehensive and definitive resources on artists.
 Valued for both its wide coverage of lesser-known artists and its deep coverage of artists
occupying the core pantheon of (mostly European) art, the Benezit is an essential
resource for scholars, librarians, museum curators, art dealers, and collectors.
 Updated three times per year to reflect new scholarship, additions to the bibliographies,
and corrections; concurrent with Grove Art updates
 Images continue to be added to Benezit, now also through the partnerships with
ArtistsSignatures.com, which brings new artists’ signatures to the resource,
complementing the existing collection of over 11,000 images, and the Frick Collection,
which is providing Benezit with portraits (and self-portraits of artists)
